Official Synopsis for Spike Lee's Oldboy Revealed

posted on by Ko Ransom
Synopsis indicates notable deviations from South Korean movie; FilmDistrict announced as distributor

US film distributor FilmDistrict has acquired the distribution rights to Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Park Chan-Wook's live-action film Oldboy, and with this acquisition has come the first official synopsis of the film. The synopsis in its entirety reads:

OLDBOY follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor's motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

Both the number of years Brolin's character has been imprisoned and Olsen's character's occupation have been changed from the original.

In January, Variety reported that production on the film has been delayed until late summer or early fall because of actor Josh Brolin's press commitments for his Men in Black 3 film. Brolin is slated to play the male lead in the film.

Mandate Pictures is developing the project with producers Doug Davison and Roy Lee (The Ring, Dark Water [2005], Death Note and Godzilla remake plans) of Vertigo Entertainment and Lee's 40 Acres & A Mule Productions. Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) wrote a script, and Mandate Pictures President Nathan Kahane is serving as executive producer.
