Leiji Matsumoto Wins Japanese Cultural Award

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
The Japanese government has anounced the 783 winners of the national cultural award.

23 people including Leiji Matsumoto received awards in the cultural and scientific category, called the Shiju-Hosho Prize.

Matsumoto is best known as the creator of Star Blazers and the Harlock Universe (Galaxy Express 999, Arcadia of My Youth) and most recently had directed a number of animated music videos for the french pop group Daft Punk.

The Japanese government awards the cultural awards every November to people who they think contributed to Japanese culture for many years. The winners of The Order of Cultural Merit, highest order, are decorated by the Emperor himself in the Emperor Palace on Nov the 3rd. It is the national holiday called Cultural Day.
