Spirited Away Features in USA Today

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
A pair of stories about Spirited Away appear in USA Today...

Yesterday USA Today posted two feature articles about Spirited Away on their website, Susan Wloszczyna's article, Disney hopes Japanese 'toon casts U.S. spell, takes a look at Disney's marketing of Spirited Away. It appears that Disney is not ignoring the Anime niche market. Pam Coats, Disney's head of animation development, had this to say: "What I am personally hoping for is it will first reach niche markets like college kids and animé fans, then spread through word of mouth."

A second article, also by Susan Wloszczyna and about Miyazaki himself, entitled Animation virtuoso makes sweet 'toons with Disney is available to read online. According to this article, there is a tribute to Pixar and Lasseter in Spirited Away: "The hopping lamp that welcomes visitors is a nod to Luxo Jr., the desk light that opens each Pixar release and stars in Lasseter's first short."

Furthermore, Hunter Gren has informed us that both features on Spirited Away appear in today's (9-18-02) USA Today.

The story has a page A-1 lead-in with the main artilcle about the film itself on page 1D and a follow up article about Miyazaki on page 10D Both of the articles are well written and put the film in a positive light.
