VIZ Media Acquires Blue Dragon Anime

posted on by Egan Loo
Adaptation of Xbox 360 RPG debuted in Japan on April 7

VIZ Media announced that it has secured the license for the Blue Dragon anime adaptation of the Xbox 360 roleplaying game of the same name. The television series had just begun airing in Japan on April 7. The license includes television, home-video, and non-video-game merchandising rights.

The original game is the first time that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest character designer and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, and Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu have collaborated since the classic roleplaying game Chrono Trigger. The game debuted in Japan on December 7, 2006, and will arrive in America on August 15, 2007.

Like its predecessors, Blue Dragon is expanding its world with anime, but this TV series from Naruto's Studio Pierrot boasts a mostly different crew including Rave Master director Yukihiro Matsushita and Ichi the Killer: Episode 0 character designer Tsuneo Ninomiya. Keiko Nemoto (Naruto's Shizune) leads an entirely new cast as Shu, the boy who protects his homeland from an ominious ancient enemy, with a little help from his dragon familiar.

Two manga series have also adapted the game—including one by Death Note artist Takeshi Obata—but the announcement did not include either version.
