Mars' Fuyumi Soryo Launches Marie Antoinette Series With Palace of Versailles' Supervision
posted on by Karen Ressler
This year's 38th issue of Kodansha's Morning magazine published the first chapter of a new history manga by Fuyumi Soryo (Mars, ES ) titled Marie-Antoinette on Thursday. The manga will focus on the lives of the titular queen and her husband King Louis XVI. The Palace of Versailles in France is providing editorial supervision for the manga so that the clothes, architecture, and etiquette customs can be reproduced faithfully.
The first chapter begins with Marie-Antoinette's arrival in France from Austria at age 14.
Soryo published her Mars manga in Bessatsu Friend from 1996-2000, and Tokyopop published all 15 volumes of the manga and the Mars Gaiden prequel in 2002-2004. The manga inspired a Taiwanese drama series in 2004-2005. A 10-episode Japanese live-action drama adaptation premiered in January and a film concluding the story premiered on June 18. Soryo also drew the manga ES (Eternal Sabbath), which Del Ray published in English.
