Jazz music is much the stars as the main cast in this story about teens who become friends in late 1960s Japan. Great sounds and good character development bolster what is otherwise a fairly pedestrian character drama.

ES may not have epic battles, slews of beautiful women, or angst-ridden romance, but it does have exceptional insight into its cast of well-rounded characters, a chilling premise, and more brains and guts than almost any other half a dozen manga.
