Well I was Amazed today. As I went to a book store to buy a manga. I saw Battle royale a manga for 18+ up.
Now when I saw the back of the book there in the little corner. It said parental Advisory. 10 minutes later I saw a 14 year old reading the book in front of his parents. Amazing how parents don’t know a damn about what their children reading/watching ETC. And in the end they blame the manga itself influencing the Child to make some bad stuff while they are the ones that bought the item itself. Every time my Brother buys a book, CD, game ETC. I will see the age rating. And Especially Battle Royale. I was flipping through the pages and well I all I know that this manga is not for kids. So my Question is: Do you think manga(and anime) is taken to lightly because is a book or has animation? And do you think it’s the parents fault that there children are reading mature manga? Wow I haven't made a thread for months

Oh definitely. I've seen parents check out Eva for their child probably just because it's a cartoon. Parents don't know what the stuff is. They just see "comic book" or "cartoon" and think it's all good.
Of course, then they probably take a second and look at what their child is reading/watching and get all bent out of shape that it exists, rather than slapping themselves with a wet noodle for not supervising their child better. |

some kids are mature enough to read an 18+ manga at only like, 14. It exists just so the stupid parents can't get mad at the book company since it said 18+. Its like a rated R movie, some kids can watch it and enjoy it for what it is, others are stupid and then will start to jump off buildings because they did it in the movie.
but i have yet to see a parent blaming a manga for like problems with their kid that probably has to do with them being crappy parents. |

14 isn't that young to be reading Battle Royale. I doubt parents would care especially if they really know their children, and know that they are responsible. I don't really see a problem there. And if the parents blame anime and manga then they are idiots that don't know their children.

Alot of parents don't care what their kids read, but there are alot who do (and are usually overprotective). I think it's diffrent for every kid. My parents really didn't restrict what I watched or read when I was a kid, but there are some children who have very poor judgement. So I guess I'm about in the middle of the road on the issue, and since I don't have kids of my own I can't really judge anyone.

To be fair, Kinji Fukasaku said that 15 year olds could sneak in to see the movie. And I don't even see a rating or warning on the novel. (Although its subject matter isn't any more inappropriate for minors than the young adult titles I read or heard about in my public library when I was growing up.(Physically, anyway.)) And let's face it. Most of the BR cosplayers are young adults. OTOH, if they got their hands on Ichi the Killer or those Guinea Pig flicks, that'd be a different story. Seeing Faces of Death IV when I was 16 or 17 scared the shilznit out of me. But for all I know, that kind of mature content could just make them into pretentious filmmakers who rip off anime and Asian films into a three hour film which is cut in half to sell it twice. Oh wait, I was just digressing. Back to the subject at hand.

I usually blame peer pressure and a society that promotes bad behavior myself. That's why a guy who cheats at rugby by hitting his opponent in the crotch can become President. Oh wait, I'm digressing again. *whistles*
It's probably taken lightly, because it's not Uziga. (If you decide to google that name, it's not work-safe.)
It might be partly the fault of the parents, but I think the bookstore managers need to be doing a better job as gatekeepers, so that kids don't just randomnly rip open the plastic off of titles like BR while they're not looking. It's not like the habit of stores lumping 18+ anime or games with the regular kind, because in the case of manga, a kid can obviously know about the content without ever having to make a purchase. The stores consider the shrink-wrapping a way of avoiding liability, and so they just place the titles for older readers in the same section as the titles for younger readers, and the parents can't possibly tell the difference between Berserk and Dragon Ball. (I remember some guy telling me that, in Japan, manga stores usually have separate sections for mature content.)That kind of apathy's going to come back to haunt the stores and manga publishers in the future, especially considering the current political climate. I'd probably recommend that the adult titles be put on a rack near the counter, and that way, the employees can card anyone who doesn't look 18. XCTU:

Tell me GATSU, do you think it's fair for a bookstore to censor someone elses work simply because someone finds offense with it? Should stores shrinkwrap Mein Kampf because it caused Genocide? Should we put black dymo tape over all the "naughty bits" in a Nudes Reference Book that shows no sexual intercourse? Should we segregate 1984, Catcher in the Rye, and Fareinheit 451 to a "special section" and monitor those that buy such books because they might pollenate Anti-Goverment Feelings? A bookstore's first duty is to uphold that #1 Amendment in the constitution. And I don't mean Freedom of Religion. Still, some stores do take appropiate measures when it comes to such material. Of course, not all stores have Otaku on their payrolls. Try and go to several different bookstores. You might be surprised at the varying degrees some stores take in "protecting" Adult Manga from little kids, thought it's more in the name of Loss Prevention than Censorship. Of course, if you wish to design a similar security system that keeps DVD's and Videos in those bulky Plastic Cases for Manga, then make sure I get a 2.5% royalty for suggesting the idea. 
Whoops, didn't see this the first time. I'll let you in on a little dirty secret GATSU my boy: It's mostly the CEO's and Higher Ups, whom have little to no knowledge of day-to-day operations of Hundreds of Stores across the nation that put Battle Royale in little kiddies hands. While the Store level employees might know better to dump BR behind the counter, the CEO or RM only considers them as "Assets" that need to be sold, and hiding them is no way of selling them. So, out they go onto the floor and into the hands of those that shouldn't be reading spoiler[Mitsuko detailing how she seduced a famous boxer into having sex with her by peeing onto the floor of an arena hallway.]. So if anything, you should be mad at those that sit in an office all day more than those that sell such material. Just a little insider tip.

No, but publishers should ideally put disclaimers which emphasize the context of the writing in question. OTOH, I can sort of understand how black people in my neighborhood felt when a local silent theater was ready to screen Birth of A Nation, seeing as I have to deal with a double-dose of that crap with The Passion and possibly The Downfall. (Make that a triple, given that the Pope has no problems with a certain anti-Semitic nun becoming closer to sainthood, unless he suddenly found out she was gay. And I guess a quadruple, now that Al Pacino thinks he's Jewish in The Merchant of Venice.)

A bookstore's first duty is to propogate and maintain its bottom line. If you want to protect the First Amendment, do it at your library or contact the CLBDF. I don't like Wal Mart banning Maxim, but it's their choice as a business.
So does that mean that Tokyopop and Viz cut deals with a bunch of managers when they mention in their press releases "store exclusives"?
Then it doesn't change my argument, because their greed is making them stupid and/or careless. |

Borders Group policy from what I can recall is that they never censor anyones works, regardless if theirs an outcry from it. Of course, tell that to the residents of Hawaii with a certain series of books that seems to encourage Trespassing in the Islands. Dunno about Barnes and Noble; never was able to get in "that deep."

Well, if you so concerned about Fundies calling us Otaku a buncha (CENSORED) (CENSORED) (CENSORED) then why not tackle a CEO or two? Maybe ANN could do a few inquiries to the Big retailers and get their takes on this subject, no? |

What GATSU is saying actually does make a lot of sense. Keeping the Berserk next to the Dragonball is like keeping the Child of God next to the Harry Potter or the putting the Freaks next to the Wizard of Oz in a video store. I don't think it's ridiculous or censoring at all to suggest creating a kid's manga/comics section near the children's books.

that would probably lower sales. How many of you want to go into the childrens section to get a manga you want? I know i read a few "safe" manga's that they could put in the childrens section, but if i see it there, i'm not gonna go buy it from there. Seriously.

And the content in some of the manga aimed at children would certainly be enough to cause protest even though I could site an example of Newberry Award winners being just as violent content wise.
Also why don't they have a rating system on novels? A Lot of childrens novels have content more akin to an R rated movie but the usual thought is that words can't turn anyone into a phsycopath (lest we forget the strain teachers put on children to make a mental picture).[/b] |

im not sure what other bookstores are out there that you guys go to. but around here i go to either borders, waldenbooks, or suncoast. and i'll just sit there for like 30 minutes just looking at all the titles, and through them.(wishing i had enough money to buy one). but i've never really seen anything that would ever cause a big deal, at all.
maybe not a lot of people, but i've been seeing lately, that people that don't know much about manga/anime/japanese stuff, have this silly assumption that when you mention japanese comics or anime, you're talking about some kind of cartoon porn, or something or atleast that's the first thing that is mentioned to me when i talk about it, that japanese make that kinda thing. so i think people have some idea that not everything is suitable coming from japanese comics, but not everyone though. http://slate.msn.com/id/2089630/entry/2089646/ |

Well the Borders I go to has the kinds of titles were talking about. You know, Berserk, Battle Royale, Arm of Kannon, to name a few.
As for the "cartoon porn" stereotype of the old days, I don't see it that much anymore. I suspect this is due to many parents knowing about anime through Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh. As for the main topic I really wouldn't mind mature manga being seperated from the other manga, so long as neither area would be stigmatized in any way. I wouldn't want to buy manga from the kids books section, nor would I like to go into the porn section to pick up the latest Berserk. |

I thought BR was shrinkwrapped..? Can't we solve all this just by shrinkwrapping the hardcore adult titles? If some unsupervised kid pulls off the wrapping, that's the fault of the store/parent not watching him. Besides, the books all have descriptions on the back.. I figure most fans looking to purchase BR or Berserk already know what's going on.
