Before I begin my delivery of a small issue, I want to say I love TRSI. I really do.

That being said, I discovered this sale from their website yesterday, and decided to see what's available only to close the list after a few pages due to frustration.

Perhaps my ignorance isn't allowing me a reasonable justification for the "pre-order" in anime, a business that's so over-burdened with product, there are things dated all the way back to 1848 collecting dust on shelves.

I'm being a little facetious here to keep levity afloat as I really don't want to come off as ranting. However, I just don't see why ordering BDs, DVDs, or manga "requires" a pre-order, as though we aren't going to get our product if we don't reserve it.

Where it matters is where it fails, and that's merchandise. Merchandise that's very rare and hard to get when imported, such as figures. I like figures.

I find it uncomfortable there is no TRSI price in the "Your Price" column, which seems to include many non-media pre-order.

I'm not sure if this means I'm supposed to take (up to) 30% off the SRP or file it under the ad's other notice of "on most items", meaning SRP is the price I'd pay (pre-GA discount).

I bring this up only because many of those same merchandise items require a pre-order in order to purchase, which is why the (up to) 30% seems misleading. As soon as this sale is over, nothing would change, correct?

I know I should post on their website, but reality states there are more viewers here and I know TRSI reps frequent the joint.

As someone who almost always pre-orders her stuff, I'll answer you on the "why".

It's so I get it in a decent timeframe. We generally buy only on sales, which meant that our order for the Gundam 00 movie went in 2 days after its release. And it's on backorder, for both the DVD (for my roommate) and the BD (for a friend).

Plus, when it's preordered, we don't have to worry about remembering when it comes out to get the order in (or for a sale to come around before a LE might sell out), and we get an e-mail to tell us if it's been delayed, or when its status changes on our order.

I've got almost $70 I'm planning on spending on the sale, provided I get the job I'm interviewing for today. And that's just the stuff that I can't get free shipping with on another sale. My Viz books and my Sailor Moon/Sailor V books can wait for a Viz or Kodansha sale.

Typically, an item (well, DVD, anyway) at TRSI is 25% off MSRP. This sale bumps it up to 30% off MSRP for most pre-order items (things like Aniplex titles that normally see no discount remain their usual price.) It's basically the opposite of the in-stock sales they do every so often. It's not a great discount, but you are free to pick and choose across the (pre order) catalog instead of being bound to one studio like in a typical sale. I find these handy for picking up the odd manga titles where I only read one or two from a specific publisher, and therefore can't really use the studio sales. It may be a couple percent more, but I can assemble a free shipping order much more easily.

As for 'why preorder?'- it's just handy. I don't have to worry about scrounging the internet or the local bookstore or Best Buy every week to make sure I don't miss the release of the next volume of my titles of choice... it's taken care of. I've got something like the next 4-6 months of releases of my manga on preorder at any given time, and it's real nice to just have it show up as it releases. Plus, I know exactly how much it'll cost- no guessing on what I'll need each month and beamoaning date changes that screw that up. I know what I've already bought, so I need that much- done and done.

Now if you'll excuse me, for once I can actually pre-order those manga odd titles, so I have me some browsing to do. Wink

A pre-order is not required. Why do you say that it is?
You may have to pre-order a limited edition item, but even that is not always true. If 500 are made and 500 people pre-order then you will not get it unless you are one of those 500. But if only 300 people pre-order then there will still be 200 left for those who did not pre-order. Actually, you can find some rather old limited items that are still available in the bargain bin.

It does seem to me that the post here is not very clear about that.
It looks to me like the extra 5% has already been deducted and "your price" is what you will pay. I think that should have been explained in the post.
If there is no "your price" then you pay the list price.

By the way, your link does not work for me. It takes me to the "Sorry, no items matching your search terms were found" page.

It's pretty much the same as during the in-stock sale, except it was clearer on that because they required a coupon code, so the stuff from NISA and Aniplex (I didn't even look at figures since almost none of them are ever "in stock") had the message "not eligible for coupon discounts" on their pages.
