I have to agree with Nagisa. It really depend on the fight more than the weapon. Also it depend on the character also. If the anime takes place during modern or futuristic period, guns seem more desireable though, while historical times, sword was the weapon of choice.
People are saying how cool the sword fight scene are and they're just thinking of samurai champloo or samurai x. Gunfight can be dramtic too, it's not just "bang I shot you and you're dead". You need skill in dogding the bullets as well as aiming and firing. Trigun, Hellsing and Priest are a good example.
To me it doesn't really matter. A cheap sword fight can be just as lame as a crappy gun fight. It really depend on the character and how he used it. They're just both weapon an both require a certain skill level.

I personally prefer a sword battle. they were the first weapons ever created and its something that hasn't phased out yet. useing a sword means that you have trained for years to become proficiant with it. with a gun you can become a marksman in a short time.
besides swords usually make the character. it shows the honor and discipline in which they carry themselves. whether it be samari or final fantasy or even highlander films.
ps sorry for misspellings im very tired when i wrote this

If you discount the sharpened sticks & rocks, spears, & slingshots that came before them, among other things.

So...wait, which modern military or police force still uses swords?

Typical of the "zomg sords r kewl" stance. Way to underestimate the difficulty of wielding a firearm.

Because the whole "way of the gun" thing doesn't exist, right?

In the US military, swords and sabres still play a symbollic role. They can be worn with dress uniforms, such is the case with the Marines or the cavalry in the Army.
I have yet to have seen much swordplay in the anime I have watched, so I'd have to go with guns by default.

Yes. As decoration. Not a practical weapon, as it's long been rendered obsolete in that regard and has been phased out in favor of a more advanced arsenal.
And believe it or not, I actually really enjoy watching a good swordfight, and I do think bladed weapons can be very appealing in their design. However, this blind bias that some people (and far too many anime fans) have towards them as being "ZOMG SOOOO SUPERIOR" is absolutely ridiculous, I'm sorry to say.

Bayonets and knives still exist in the modern soldiers arsenal for close combat though they're a far cry from actual swords.

i never like noir much. the fact that no one but the main characters can shoot kind of bothered me. i think it was the scene where they were on the steps and one of them took out 20 guys who could've filled the air with bullets and made her look like cheese.

Feh, swords, guns, martial arts. We all know what the real answer is.........
tanks.
And yes, I feel at least 10 years behind the times for posting a picture of Leona and Bonaparte.

I would say swords,
Because i personaly like swords better than guns,in real life if i had to choose between getting a sword and a gun,i would pick the sword.
But something i like better than swords and guns is,magic fights, like using spells with staffs and stuff like that.I like anime were they use both like in Scrapped Princess.

You can't really compare shows like Cowboy Bebop to Samurai Champloo when it comes to the topic of swords versus guns. They're both awesome series, no doubt about that.
As far as preference goes though, I'd definitely go with swords. Don't get me wrong, I love a good gun fight, but with swords, the characters have to move much more smoothly. If a sword battle is done well enough, it can look like the characters are almost dancing rather than dueling. I think with these kinds of battles it's more about appreciating the art and beauty of it rather than just the killing and whatnot (which is awesome too, of course, lol).

Personally, I prefer sword fighting. I like guns too but theres not alot of close physical contact. Not much action, like jumping around or swishing your sword at light speed. In gun fighting theres just a whole bunch fires and sparks. And a whole lot of aiming. I guess i like swords better, especially in Japanese animes because they were the first weapons used. Call me old fashion if you want, but i like to stick with the old and cooler weapons
I guess I'm also trying to say- gun animation fighting somehow seems unrealastic to me. I prefer to watch them on the big screens....dont know why though....

Swords or guns......swords or guns? I'd probably say swords. A good sword fight is always interesting, not to say I don't like guns. Like some people have posted before, you just can't compare animes like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop to Samurai Champloo and Ruroni Kenshin. Toatally different fight sequences. You can shoot a person and they're dead, or you can chop a head off or stick a sword into their stomach and they're dead. I'm always up for a good gun fight , but I like swords better.
