Has anyone read the manga "Red River" by Chie Shinohara. I'm currently reading an would like to discuss it with anyone who has read it. I feel like I'm the only that buys it LOL. My friends aren't that excited by it. But I do, I love the character's and the storyline.

Any takers?

Yes, I read Red River. I'm up to vol. 5. Actually, my friend lends me her copies, cause she's the one that's crazy over it. I still like it well enough myself though. I thought it was pretty cool when I heard Viz had licensed it, since a friend who used to live in Vietnam told me about a manga she had read while she was living there. She couldn't really remember the name, but she knew it was about a girl who fell through water and ended up in the ancient Middle East. Then about a month later I read about Viz's license of Red River on ANN, and figured out that it was the manga my Vietnamese friend was talking about. So anyway, I thought that was a cool coincidence. Anime smallmouth

When I first started reading Red River, I thought the art looked kind of dated, but now I find the art style part of its charm. The bishounen are all drawn well anyway, so that's all that really matters. Anime smile I find the setting unique (I've never read another manga set in ancient Anatolia at least), and the romance is pretty hot n' heavy, which is definitely a plus. I can't believe the mangaka managed to stretch it out to 28 volumes long, but the storyline I've read so far has been pretty exciting and fast-paced. I guess I appreciate its epic scope the most, and it reminds of Basara in a few ways. In some ways I feel guilty for not purchasing a manga series I like, but there's only so much I can buy. Anime cry I let my manga-lending friend borrow tons of my own stuff as well (like Basara), so I'm not a complete mooch. Wink

I agree at first glace it looked out date but the story line makes up for it, actually its up to volume 7 (it was released on 7/13/05) The romance between yuki and kail is so strong even though they are from different times, I love especially that yuki never changes for anyone. She stays opinioned and always likes to make her own way. I wonder if they will ever make it into an anime that would be very awesome.
As for the lending, I know how you feel everyone I know comes to me whenever they need an anime or manga. So I decided to charge for rentals Very Happy It works, they pay two dollars per movie and one dollar per book, So far I bought my self an mini Ipod with the money I made Laughing

Wow, you are a very enterprising person, criminalist. Anime smallmouth I just read your profile in the intro thread, and that's quite a collection, so good for you for coming up with your "solution." As for my friends and I, we mostly just use the "barter system" where we just lend each other stuff, so it's pretty fair. My friend with Red River has lent me her entire collection of manga, and I've lent her mine (we're both shoujo manga addicts), so it works out fine for me.

Yes, I know that vol. 7 of Red River recently came out (it was advertised in Shoujo Beat and all), but 5 volumes are all that my friend has bought so far. I'm trying hard not to be selfish and demand that she get the next 2. Anime catgrin As for an anime Red River, since the manga ended fairly recently in 2002 (according to the ANN encyclopedia), there's a still glimmer of hope that it might yet be animated. Frankly though, I think this is highly unlikely. Long-running shoujo manga series seem be ignored by animation companies. My theory is that, unlike long-running shounen manga that have been successfully made into anime, the shoujo series (especially anything not magical-girl) just don't have as much diverse appeal or merchandising potential to finance a long run. But yeah, it would be cool if Red River defied the odds and was animated.

Hmm, while Yuri's not my favorite shoujo manga character, she's definitely admirable. She compares rather favorably against a certain OTHER girl sent to an ancient world where guys fawn all over her (otherwise known as Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi) Unlike that heroine, Yuri's quite resourceful and quick-thinking, and is actually able to save herself a few times. Plus, she can fight decently. She gets protected by Kail a lot (and who wouldn't want to be protected by him Wink), but also is frequently separated and has to do her own thing, so it's a nice balance.

I know that Yuri (I know i mispelled her name before LOL) is a cool character. She's very head strong, and Kail is pretty hot too. It makes me want to be kidnapped by a evil sorcercess queen so I can meet my handsome rescuer LOL.

*stands up and waves* Here I am, I love Red River too! I only thought the art on the first cover looked dated. Yuri was wearing that 80s style jacket that looks like a life preserver and that was weird. The rest of the art is very good still.

Oh, I just really love adventure girl stories. The story line is awesome and takes place in an totally different era that hasn't been explored by other authors recently. It gives the costumes and sets a really fresh look. In FY, Miaka didn't fight much and in Twelve Kingdoms, Youko had a "hinman" that made her into a good fighter. The idea that Yuri can suddenly fight with a sword and ride a horse as an expert seems a little silly but it's not too over-the-top that I don't like it. I'm sure that if I get to go to another world, I'll be a born-again expert at everything too!

And the love story is so sweet. Really, that's how I love my guy too! Embarassed

And I'm a Basara fan too!

Basara is a great series too.

I really got into the series cause my sister got it for me on my birthday. She taught it looked interesting so she bought for me (She's so Kawaii) anyway, I let her read too and she likes it but not as much as Peach Girl. Its still her No.#1 manga.

And now that the series is an anime even more.

Yes, Basara rocks! It's one of the few shoujo series my friend Rachel will read (she's more into shounen manga). That's because there's as much action/adventure as there is romance in it.

Well, Yuri does recieve some sword training from Kail's brother and others, so her skill is not completely unrealistic. But yeah, I see what you mean. Maybe it turns out that Yuri really does have the protection of Ishtar, so that's why she's able to survive all that crazy stuff? Anime smile That would make sense. Anyway, I'd rather have Yuri fight even if it's not that realistic, than be totally helpless. You know, girl power and all that Wink

I agree. Maybe it does turn out that Yuri is really Ishtar. I can't wait for the next book. I also noticed that the writer did alot of research cause if you look up the places that the story takes place they are real place in ancient babylon time.

I found out cause I'm taking ancient history at school and they mentioned some of the cities that are in the manga. I taught that was cool.

Yes, I believe that Ishtar was the name of the gates to Babylon. They're famous for having mosaics with strange dragons called Sirrush, that were supposed to be the gates' guardians (dragon-fan over here. Smile )
