I think funimation is a major anime distributer of anime in NA and they always dub their stuff. Which I know costs ALOT. How can funimation do this all the time when some animes don't do well? Are they in the red? Or are they doing well financially? Anyone know?

All signs point to Funi being fine. It's pretty hard to be in a tough financial spot when you have DBZ in your pocket. Smile

If they can afford to dub everything, then they're obviously not in the red.

Sorry if this is coming off as rude but I feel like the answer should be common sense. FUNimation is the only anime company that continues to pay for expensive dubs for ALL their series. They're not stupid. If they couldn't afford it, they wouldn't be doing it like that, and would be much more selective of what they licensed and dubbed (and would likely be releasing sub-only stuff too at that point).

Just for the record, FUNimation dubs everything in anime. For live-action releases, there are a few of them that did not include an English dub (see below):
  • Daytime Drinking - Korean audio
  • Hong Kong Godfather - Cantonese audio
  • The Supreme Swordsman - Mandarin audio
  • Zebraman 2: Attack On Zebra City (Blu-ray / DVD Combo) - Japanese audio

Funimation does dub every anime they release, but they also only release anime they reckon'll support it.

For Funimation and Sentai, they only spend $5,000 on an episode becasue they're non-union, so it costs half it does then what Bandai did when they were using the union actors.

And also, Funimation pointed out that they won't dub anything if it'll sell less than 3,000 units since they're a bigger company. But for Sentai, they say it's a hit for them if they can sell that many.

Funi, like every other R1 distrib, is a privately owned company and as such is not required to make their financial statements public. Therefore, the only way we would know if Funi was hitting hard times would be if an insider spilled the beans (which never seems to happen) or if there started to be external signs of distress like employees getting laid off, number of licenses and releases shrinking noticeably, etc. All we can say at this point is that Funi is not exhibiting any signs of distress that I can discern.

When they were owned by Navarre we got to see their quarterly reports. I believe they were at a loss.

They are definitely the heart and soul of our market. I just don't understand how they can stay afloat when they offer their series at such inexpensive prices. More power to them I guess.

My understanding was that they just had a disappointing ROI; companies cut off low-profit divisions all the time.

What would happen if Funimation lost the rights to DBZ? I know that's a huge cash cow for them still >.>

I think they should sub the shows that sell less than 3k units so we atleast have somewhat of a choice. Anyone else think it's a good idea?

Funimations anime releases are usually always bilingual (English, and original *insert language here* audio) so we always have a choice. All you have to do is switch audio tracks if you don't like the version you're watching, and having multiple audio tracks provides multiple viewing experiences, which is awesome. That's the reason why they're my favorite company, because I like options, I wouldn't want them to do anything differently than they're doing. Well, that and they just happen to licensed tons of stuff I like.

During the period at Navarre Funimation was never at a loss. They were profitable every quarter. However Navarre didn't feel the ROI was high enough.

It depends what you mean. There's really no reason for Funiation to go out and license obscure shows sub only. Sentai is still going strong, and they do that all the time. Might as well just let Funi pass on the obscure stuff all together and let Sentai put it out.

That said, I'm still a bit apprehensive about Funimation streaming shows and then not releasing them on DVD. It doesn't seem to be a deal breaker (House of Five Leaves did get picked up by NISA) but I can't think it helps either. So yeah, I wouldn't mind if they started doing sub only DVDs for the stuff they've already streamed but don't think justifies a dub.

Personally, I don't think there is any advantage to Funi changing their "dub it all" policy. And I don't say that as a die-hard dub lover - I have no problem supporting sub-only releases. But part of Funi's company brand is the dub it all thing and I don't see any advantage for them to them to dilute it. I think that not only helps them with their customer base, but i think it might help them with Japanese license-holders, as well, who know their title will get a real push in the R1 marketplace (relative to other distribs).
