I dont like funimation anymore i mean they make good animes , but they cut mostly all the good stuff. EX.

When Dragon ball Z tree of might was done by pioneer, well not done by it , but you know what i mean. It look more like a dark story and there was more action a more of everything. Like nudnity (funny word) But know funimation doesn't even show that stuff when they make dragon ball z movies or other animes. WHY?. Correct me if i'm wrong ok, but isn't fullmetal alchemist by funimation. That's basicly the best job they've done. I don't know anymore. Funimation is really not a good company. That's why i prefer ADV films.

Clearly, you haven't watched anything, aside from FMA, that Funimation has done since Fruits Basket or so. There's no censorship, and while the dubs aren't always 100% accurate (which honestly, they can't be), the basic plots of the anime aren't changed. I don't think the standard rolleyes emoticon is powerful enough for this post, so I'll have to bring in this:

Watch some other anime that Funimation has done in the last 3-4 years, and see for yourself if things are the same as they were in the DBZ days. They're not.

I haven't seen enough from Funimation to judge them either, but I like them because they've worked with some of my favorite anime, like FMA. I would agree DBZ was not one of their better productions, but I can definitely see they've improved.

Wow, thinking on your comment, DBZ would have been so much better if it actually was made by Pioneer. I probably would have liked it then.

Pioneer only acted as distributor for the first two seasons and first three movies. The TV series was distributed by Saban back then on TV, and trust me, you wouldn't have wanted them continuing on it at the rate they were going at.

Also a more anal thing, FUNimation don't make Anime. They license it from a Japanese production company and adapt/release it into the US. They haven't done an edited, dub only disc in a long time (and those were mostly 4Kids titles, not FUNimation's), and everything else is uncut.

DBZ is another matter, but coming september they intend (apparently) to make good on it.

To be honest, as a Tenchi fan my opinions are fairly mixed on Funimation, since they're handling my pet favorite franchise.

On the plus side, they managed to get the majority of the classic Pioneer dub cast for the OAV's, and the video transfers on the discs for the 3rd OAV and GXP have been irreproachable. In GXP it's also notable that they included the honorifics in the subtitles and a few well-needed cultural notes and kanji subs.

However, there've been quite a few "liberties" taken with the dub scripts. The whole "Unko" joke in GXP, for instance, is lost in the dub, which is a shame because it's hysterical. The replacements for the original cast in the OAV dub are rather poor choices. Mona Marshall comes across as a whiny tomboy, rather than Petrea Burchard's classic flirtatious woman of-ill-repute. And, well, we learned Rebecca Forstadt was terrible as Mihoshi in Shin Tenchi Muyo.

But, script and cast issues aside, no harm, no foul, and otherwise Funimation has treated Tenchi as well as Pioneer did in the way back when.

I got to say Funimation actually did a very good job with Dragonball Z. Now as mature anime fans we might not agree, but they leveraged the product at a particular market, and well made the series a household name. You cannot argue with success. They made money hand over fist. Go to your local brick, and mortar. See all those Dragonball Z DVDs prominently displayed. They are there, because they sell.

They simply took a product, and defined what audience they would aim it at. Then they touched up the series to fit our societies acceptable norms for such a audience. In this case older children to early teens.

That makes me think of Gantz where for the television airing they made the creators edit out a scene of bikers sitting on their bikes, and not wearing helmets. Oh my god you guys are sick. Now think of the rest of the show. Japan, and america have somewhat different standards. After all imagine what they would say if in the simpsons people got graphically blown apart. Though they have no problem with homer getting bombed, and driveing drunk through the local elementary.

I personally have no problem with funimation. They are a company trying to sell products in the way they think will work best for them. Sadly sometimes they are going to angle the product at a demographic that is not us. People who buy things have a right to do what they want with them.

Well, being a very big advocate for the old DBZ I can say I hated FUNimation's guts when they started trying to do their own productions. The new voices sounded like very bad impersonations by people off the streets of Fort Worth (only an hours drive from my house), and heck, even I can impersonate Brian Drummond or Scott McNeil better than that instead of having one guy casted as half the characters in the whole freakin' series.

But hey, that's life. Nothing ever goes as smooth as we'd like, and I'll just have to live with what I've got now; near perfect production in the Pioneer versions of the movies and sub-only preferences for anything succeeding FUNi's inception in the late 90s.

Regardless though, having heard their newer productions in Fullmetal Alchemist, Gunslinger Girl, and a bit of Desert Punk, it's much better than I would've thought they'd be.

My only possible concern is how they translate and modify the English scripts. I mean, why make the dub script that much different from the translated one and even have two sets of subtitles on the DVD? Can't they just make a more parallel version to fit both? I also don't like their dubbing opening and ending songs.

Granted, I listened to the first episode of Desert Punk (with no subs) in English and found the crude jokes humorous (such as the "you're mother's a dirty whore" bit) even though that's probably not how the script really translates, but the overall casting and flow of dialogue was much better than the crap I was used to hearing in all their DB stuff.

I'm not sure if they're just trying to totally separate the two languages to further the gap between English and Japanese dubs and make each an extreme for the audience's preference or what. But as long as they give me an option between the two (semi-cut and uncut), I've no real qualms with it.

However, their treatment of BECK will be my litmus test of how I perceive them throughout their next slew of licensed titles.

ADV on the other hand... No, I'm not gonna' start with my rant on their crap... To all of you who have been here long enough, you know I can't stand them, and I'll just leave it that.

At first, I hated Funimation; mainly because I dislike Dragonball but over the years, I have seen Funimation improved 1000% IMO. I like Funimation. They have wonderful VAs and really do their best to stick to the "original" as much as they can.

These days, I'd rather buy Funimation and Geneon. Two years ago it was ADV and Geneon. Of course, it depends on if they have a title that I want to get.

Funi wasn't always a model example of a licensor but they've really come around in recent years and they're one of my preferred licensors at this point since they usually have consistently good packaging but don't have a higher than normal retail price. I mean, if I go to Best Buy and pick up a Bandai release and a Funi release, I pretty much always feel like I got more for my money with the Funi release.

Hello, oh time traveler from the year 1997! Welcome to the far future year of 2006! In this strange land of high speed internet and blogging, FUNimation has actually become a company of great respect. Though your decade-old DBZ fanboy bias may not let you believe it, they have long since re-released that property completely uncut and—*gasp!*—subtitled! And other anime titles, such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Fruits Basket, Gunslinger Girl, and even generic Gonzocrap like Kiddy Grade and Burst Angel have received nothing short of the four-star treatment! Lo, it is but a strange future for you, weary time traveler, but one that those of us of the age have embraced with open arms!

...

Seriously, grow up.

I can see a hundred things going wrong with this release such as music, Engrish/dubbing, etc, so I'm not going to judge Funi based on their release of Beck. I'll leave it up to them to surprise me. Actually wouldn't a better "litmus test" be the upcoming release of FMP: TSR? Perhaps if ADV's releases of FMP and Fumoffu are better than Funi's, you might rid yourself of that "bias." Personally, I've been very satisfied with ADV releases. The company I'm the least fond of has been Geneon, because I have had issues with the layout and options on their DVDs. They have nice boxes, though.

Depends on if they hire the same VAs or not. They have been known to hire a few people from ADV every now and then. If they "bring back the old cast," then it might be just as crappy as all the other English FMPs. The only real difference will probably be the voice director. If they get Barry Watson to do it, I might even give it a listen. Otherwise, I'll stick to Seki Tomokazu, Yukino Satsuki, Miki Shinichiro, and the rest over Patton, Christian, and Mignogna. "Kuhnami Chihdooray," Laughing I always laugh at that.

In any case, even if BECK does suck in English, I'm sure they'll leave it just the way it is in Japanese. All they really need to do is slap on some subtitles. I could care less what they do with the dub. I'm more curious just to hear what it'd sound like, rather than anticipating some sort of cosmically awesome performance to make me switch my general preference.

I used to REALLY hate funimation, now I just "don't like" them.

The biggest problem I've had with them is the voice actors, but truth be told only part of the problem is theirs. A large part of the problem I have is that voice actors here in the US are by and large no where NEAR as dedicated to the craft as their Japanese counterparts.

Someone please explain to me how a movie actor like Billy Bob Thorton can be a much better voice actor than the VAST majority of people I hear on dub?

I also don't like it when they remove jokes, puns, and subjects that they decide americans won't get or just aren't in our culture, but once again, they're not the only ones who do it. However, just because they're not the only ones who do it doesn't make it ok in my book.

I'd like to chime in with some rational defenses of FUNimation here... especially when they're probably the one company apart from Viz with the financial clout to actually invest in bringing over anime to North America these days... but after the outdated DBZ censorship rant and the outright disrespect to ADV's Don Rush and the entire Texas dub acting industry, I'm not even sure where to begin.

To address one point as a guy who's actually watched most of FUNimation's dubs over the past three years, they have three... and only three... definable faults.

1) They have inconsistent scripting (particularly when Burgmeier's not involved).
2) They rotate directors or employ director "teams" far more than necessary (especially on shorter series).
3) They have a longer working-in period getting a dub off the ground than their industry cohorts at ADV, NewGen, Westwood and elsewhere.

And that's about it.

On the positive end of things, they have the finest engineers in this business and access to the best talent pool in this industry when you factor in their access to some of the big names in NYC, the regular commuters from ADV's pool in Houston and their talent exchange with L.A.'s New Generation.

Couple that with securing most of the major franchises in anime that don't emanate from Shonen Jump or Geneon/Sunrise-financing and I'd say they're 'the' company to watch. Even if it does mean we get stuck with the occasional GONZO title that lays the proverbial egg.

I predict that 4Kids will eventually become like FUNimation.

I like them, myself. I enjoy their voice-acotrs very much. Probably the only company where every male character isn't voiced by Steve Blum.

Little-known-fact: Steve Blum actually voices 99.8% of male anime characters.

Also; Steve Blum is a woman.
