Why do some animes change the opening theme when they come to america? FMA used 'Ready Steady Go!' for the entire series instead of adding in 'Melissa', 'Undo', and the last one. There are more that do that. Anyone got an idea? (I probably sound very stupid for asking this, but I have always been curious).

Since some anime have to be edited for TV (not all, but most), I guess putting in one intro is just a time saver or something?

In the case of FMA, they kept "Rewrite" (the last opening theme). I remember watching it. However, they did use "Ready Steady Go" for the majority of the series in America. I agree with Tony K. that it was probably because it was easier using the same intro the entire time.

Would it also have something to do with having to pay each one of the different musical talents as well. I mean when they license a show it doesn't necessarily mean they get the music too. I may be wrong I am basing all of this on this. When they say unable to obtain rights, it just means the company that owns Duran Durans music want to much money and they didn't want to pay.
I imagine the Japanese companies do this as well. In case of FMA, it was cheaper to pay for just the first song and just stick with it. Course I don't own FMA, did they include all the different song on the DVDs? |

I would think that changing the theme songs for the first halves of each season would be more difficult.

Knowing American shows and how they have not used too many songs that actually have lyrics in them rather than say a few words, it doesn't surprise me that songs from Japan might get taken out. Take One Piece for example, they've had like 5 different opening theme songs and 10 different ending songs. That's just how the Japanese do their TV shows and that's the way Americans do television.

Ready Steady Go! replaced Melissa and Undo because of a promotional deal between L'Arc en Ciel and either Funimation or AS.

For One Piece, though, in America so far there are like 120+ eps. for 250+ eps in Japan, of course they have a lot of themes/. |

I've always assumed that the reason they change it is because they put a more 'western friendly' song on and just leave it. The western Naruto etc. audiences probably don't care much for J-Pop, so I would guess they would change some of the themes. (I don't see much anime on TV here though, as I live in the UK :O Toonami just showed episode one of Naruto for the first time last week...)

I'm pretty sure it has to do with paying royalties to the various original artists for each of the songs as well as the American way of never changing the show's theme music.

Acrually, all of the original openings for FMA were left on the DVD version. Asuka is correct about the promotional deal.

The worst change of Opening music would have to be Speed Graphers Opening though. Girls on Film fit the intro perfectly and the new non vocal junk seemed as bad as the American godzilla dubs which didn't fit at all.
I would think Japan would have to own the rights to the Girls on Film song to put it in the anime originally so wouldn't the rights tranfer over to the American company but I guess I have no clue how the music industry works. |

FUNimation had to negotiate the US rights seperately, and they failed. It wasn't a change they wanted to make, unlike for example Cardcaptors and Digimon etc. The same with Kodocha.
