At Oni-Con this weekend I got to pick up a copy of GaoGaiGar volume one (autographed by Jamie McGonnigal). Anyway when I finally got the chance I popped that baby in to hear the dub. I was blown away. In the past I have had poor experiences with Media Blasters dubbing (most recently Genshiken). But with this show they really knocked it out of the park. They kept the spirit of the show and everyone sounds fitting for their roles. Mamoru and the other children aren't annoying and all of the VAs sound like they're having a lot of fun with their roles. Also, Erica Shroeder has chosen to give Swan White a Southern twang which surprisingly works. And while I didn't think it could be done, Michael Sinterniklaas is a great English Guy. His voice fits the character and even his screaming is reminiscent of Nobuyuki Hiyama. My only gripe is that sometimes when they say "GaoGaiGar" too fast it comes out as "GaoGarGer." Also during the transformation when GaoGaiGar is yelled as opposed to the pauses between syllables (Gao Gai Gar) they have opted to say "GaoGai" and just extend the "Gar" (so it comes out as "GaoGaiGAAAAAR"). But that's just being nitpicky.
Maybe it was because I was expecting a train wreck of a dub, but really the way this series was handled is just fantastic. I was ready to be a harsh critic but I'm walking away completely satisfied. All fans should be pleased with how wonderfully the English dub has worked out.
