Will the game be over for Shonen Jump ?
As most people know by now Naruto is the most important property in Shonen Jump, and it is being broadcast on the Cartoon Network along with One Piece . The One Piece anime story line is already surpass the manga story line, and as the rate it is going the Naruto anime story line will catch up and surpass the manga soon. I think when the naruto anime and the one piece anime surpass the mangas stories line , fans will stop subscribe and stop buy the magazine, because there is no point of subscibe or buy when you can watch them on tv. So the question is will Shonen Jump become irrelavant. Will the game be over for Shonen Jump ? . |

I'm not a big fan of Naruto. I stopped watching rather early on in the series. However I do have a friend who's been watching all this time and from what I understand the anime went on for over a full year of nothing but filler episodes. If tons of filler is all that can be offered beyond the manga I don't see how it can spell doom for Shonen Jump.

The short answer is "It depends".
The Japanese manga are way ahead of the US and the US printings are continually creating new issues, as opposed to taking seasonal production breaks for thier broadcasts. Likewise, the manga are continuing in Japan but productions have taken a turn from the manga momentarily in the anime (or, well, I'm fairly sure Naruto is; IDK about OP), and the Naruto "fillers" are gaining much ire in the US fan community. Also in the US fan community gaining much ire is the 4Kids production of One Piece. Viz's translations of the respective manga are fairly decent from what I've seen, yet have still garnered some fan complaints. I can actually forsee the anime failing before the manga fail, but I also doubt that people are buying the US Shonen JUMP just for One Piece and Naruto (though, I suppose it really wouldn't surprise me too much). How? The manga is the source material, and it's pretty much where the anime gets everything from (besides the filler, which isn't that great). It's kind of impossible for it to surpass the manga... unless of course they decide to continue the story and make it into something different than the manga. Which obviously they aren't planning on, since they went into filler... Edit: I guess this was obvious since you mentioned CN and Naruto being their biggest property, but I can see you were refering to Shonen Jump in the US now. You should probably add that... |

I'm guessing you're talking about the US Shounen Jump (contrary to the one in Japan) and the answer is "obviously no". There are tons of new manga that would attract new viewers and Naruto isn't great just because it was some by-chance anime that made it big in the US. US Shounen Jump isn't going to end just because Naruto's over.

Definitely not. If the viewers of the anime were instantly chucking the manga because the anime was on TV, then volume 1 of the manga(and the rest) wouldn't have recieved that enormous boost in sales when the show premiered. It's synergy, baby!

By that logic - people should stop reading the manga for any series just because it was turned into an anime. NOTE: Anime goes into TV for Japan. Obviously, this doesn't happen; as manga sales continue. People still buy manga whether or not the anime version went on TV. Besides, Shounen Jump keeps producing one massive series after another. |

A bit off topic here, but how much does Shonen Jump cost in the US? And is it worth starting to read any of it if you haven't read the previous ones - as in, would it be joining all the manga right in the middle?

I just started subscribing to Shonen Jump a month ago, and I received my first issue last week. I don't think that it's that bad to start a series right in the middle (except for maybe Naruto and Hikaru no Go, since their at the climaxes of their arcs currently). I started reading One Piece in the magazine, and it was extremely easy to grasp exactly what was going on. A subscription fee for one year is approximately $29.99, and I forget the price of individual issues. And fighterholic, it's 'bout DAMN time you got a Jets avatar up! Though, it's not the greatest time, seeing as how we lost to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday..... |

Indivual issues are $4.95. I reccomend subscribing, as it's cheaper, and you get 'sub club' bonuses for it (Mostly game Demos and DVD sample episodes. Bleach was in the last one.)
As for the manga being mid-stream, everything starts off with an 'explaination' page telling you where things are in the story. If you're gonna start with SJ, next month is a great time- both Gin-Tama and Yugioh GX debut next issue. |

Just out of curiosity since I won't suscribe to Shonen Jump or Shojo Beat, but do they print the complete manga no matter how many chapters there are? Or do they print for 6 months to 1 year then said "If you want to see what happens next buy XXX title's Graphic Novel #XX available MMYY" or do they follow through to the end? Or does it depend on the length of the manga ie Naruto vs. ??? (something a hell of a lot shorter).

As long as they continue to put those damn Limited Edition Rare Yu-Gi-Oh cards in their magazines, they have nothing to worry about. Yeah I know a lot of people stole them, but how many more people bought them? I know a guy at my local college bought 76 issues of the last Shonen Jump because it had that Magician Valkyria card, which he sold for $15 to people after he paid $5 for each volume. He then gave away all the SJ volumes.

People also read bleach and death note, which I believe are in SJ right? So, no people are not going to stop reading it over two really bad anime, surpassing two really bad manga.

No, Bleach and Death Note don't run in the U.S. Shonen Jump magazine.
