Interesting that he was inspired by Evangelion (on the subject, Kaworu's name is romanised idiosyncratically, with a w; the article has it as Kaoru).

This text is approved by Matsuoka's Japanese handlers, I didn't want to mess with little things like that. |

Ah, okay. They must not be big Eva fans; it's a direct reflection of the Japanese spelling (and appears in English in the anime itself). Anyway, back to discussing the masterpiece that is Sword Art Online.

I've been following Matsuoka's voice since he showed up in Hourou Musuko, and I have really enjoyed his work over the past couple of years. He was great in Heaven's Memo Pad and I really think he's doing a wonderful job as Sytry in Makai Ouji. Plus all of the different emotions he went through acting-wise as Kirito were all just excellent.
I think it's really cool that Ishida Akira was his inspiration to become a seiyuu, and that he seems to be really positive about Bryce is wonderful as well. |

I am the one who transcribed the interview first, so I apologize for that. In my defense, "ヲ" can also be romanized as "o," and no one I know pronounces "カヲル" as KaWOru. If the Japanese side of things approved this change, I'd figure it's because even the fans of Eva (if the people who approved it are fans) in Japan don't romanize the name that often. Matsuoka-san was great to meet! I gave him a cake, and told him that he could share it with his friends if he didn't like cake, but he shielded it with his arms and pulled it away, and said, "Um, no. I'm going to eat it." It was really funny! He's veeeeery different from his photo, so I was surprised, but he's a really shy guy. :3 Apparently he's bad at dealing with girls... |

I feel jelly that you not only meet Haruka and Yoshitsugu but gave them cakes as well. Anyway, i like he wanted to meet his english counterpart. Hopefully it would be like how Vic visited Romi Paku. |

Coincidence that both Matsuoka and Tomatsu indicated they'd like to voice Pokemon? I suppose it'd be a higher paying job that has a decent amount of acting "stretch", maybe that's why?

No, in the Tomatsu interview, I was the one who gave the example of Pokemon, so I think it's a pure coincidence. |

Will ANN interview the whole SAO cast now? I won't be able to resist the crawling in my skin guys.

He's got quite a decent range too, as his Sytry from Makai Ouji sounds completely different from his Kirito voice. It's quite surprising that Yoshitsugu Matsuoka doesn't become more popular after SAO - this year Ryota Ohsaka and Ryohei Kimura swept almost all the main leads and he still stuck playing supporting roles. Hopefully 2014 will be his year, or he could turn out to be like Abe Atsushi and just played Kirito every year with new SAO series.

When you said you transcribed the interview, does that mean you actually conducted the interview? and transcribed it afterwards? I was only wondering because you said you actually met the cast (also jelly^^), yet I picture something different when I hear "transcribed"; like you were handed a stack of paper to translate. |

Hi! I'm happy to answer your questions. A) Yes, I conducted the interview and wrote the questions. I did get to meet Tomatsu, Matsuoka, and one other SAO staff member. We didn't get to eat lunch together or anything... lol B) When I say transcribe, I recorded our entire conversation and wrote it up in English afterwards. I was not handed a stack of paper. It probably would have been a LOT easier that way, though. lol |

I just literally re-watched it yesterday. Have to give huge props to this guy. If you don't remember, there was a lot of yelling during the fights and lots of emotion. He was able to pull of Kirito is a fantastic way. It was interesting to see he was inspired from Eva. I would have never guesses I also really like how he treats his roles as human. I think that it really gives him a connection with the character.
