And my second question would be (unless that country is already counted in the first question) what country that's dominant language is English has the largest otaku culture.

Most likely South Korea, not necessarily in terms of anime but in terms of obsessive interests (this is just a guess so someone feel free to correct me). English speaking would most likely go to the US, mainly due to having such a large population which leads to the likelihood of having super fans or larger numbers of people interested in smaller markets is increased.
But in my opinion this is based on someone's view on what level an interest becomes obsessive. |

China just because they have more people. Chinese Scanlation and fansub faster than English version.
They even translate alot of otaku VN games. Japanese to Chinese is much much easier compare to English though. You don't even have to translate some words(characters) because they are already in Chinese characters(Kanji) the second question is USA. France may have more fans, but the primary language there is not English. France's Japan Expo is bigger than Anime Expo. France's manga sale is higher than US. like 50+% of the entire European manga market. Some manga can sell 100k+ over there. |

Are you sure about that? It would almost imply that manga/anime is mainstream in France. Though in proportional terms I guess that manga/anime may be more popular in Latin America than in the US as well. The US is one of the countries that is least open to the cultural products of other countries so interest in anything foreign tends to be the smallest in the US than in any other country, in proportion to its size. |

manga is huge in France. Normal people read manga over there. There are more manga in France than US. Not sure about anime. They like different type of anime compare to US. They like Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya, we like Cowboy Bebop more. Due to much smaller market size, Taiwan can't compete with USA or China for the quantity of otaku-related consumption, although consumers can find more niched manga and light novels in Taiwan, as China still has copyright issues while USA can't reach beyond shonen mainstream. Ah, that YouTube video...... Ximen is not exactly the most comparable place with Tokyo's Akihabara; more like Harajuku, I'd say. BTW, that maid cafe is no longer in business. I know the maid-san at 1:37 in person.  She works at Maiden Diner now.

I agree with this assessment, if only because our population of (american) football otaku seems ridiculously high. |

That's the point, in a sense. An article issued by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has conjectured that Taiwan would be No.1 about the infiltration of otaku-ness into non-Japanese countries.
Yeah, so Hārì Kyōko-san and the on-screen caption mentioned Harajuku.

I find this thread interesting to read. Thanks for creating this thread. I know France is the only place outside of Asia where they take anime and manga seriously.

Ironically I would think it'd be China...which is rather strange considering their, ahem, rather gruesome history together, the bad blood running strong even right now.
After China I'd think it'd be Korea. After Korea, France. |
