Is AstroBoy, which is Kodansha's best selling manga at 80 million copies, one of those "Must Read" or "Required Reading" mangas since it's one of the first modern (I mean modern as in manga debuting in the 50s) and the first anime with an ongoing story? I would think so though I've only read the first of 5 of its 20+ volumes.

Depends on your perspective. It's probobly the most well-known manga there is and it has to be one of the most influential titles ever, so its pretty huge from a historical perspective. In terms of Tezuka's library, you'd be better off reading something like Black Jack if you want a superior shonen manga, or one of his many older titles (Phoenix, Adolf) if you want the master at the top of his game. But since Viz released a grand total of two volumes of Black Jack, Astro Boy is more or less the best choice for classic shonen manga, and to be honest it is superior to the majority of modern shonen manga, so its not a bad choice at all. Just not the man's greatest work.

I'd say it's absolutely a required reading, not just for quality, which it certainly has, but for the historical importance of the title. I'd also say, if you haven't, you should check out Tezuka's sci-fi trilogy, Metropolis, Lost World. and Future World.
