While browsing the web for anime reviews, I came across something I found to be rather disturbing. A list of skateboarding sites associated with the company Hook-Ups. Now I'm not going to rant against skateboarding or any other popular "sport." The skateboarders have their hobby, I have mine. What bothers me is the debaucherized versions of existing anime that they plaster all over their products. The never credit its original creators, and give such products such horrible names. I saw Mai Shruani, from the Fatal Fury series renamed as Giesha. I just think such companies should not discredit the fans of the original so greatly.

About 12 years ago in high school a teacher told me popular trends were moving away from Europe and towards the Far East.
Guess he was right. I'm not a sociologist, so what I'm trying to say (And hoping I'm correct) is that a great deal of the hip-hop, popular culture is based on finding something new and different and therefore cool. And since the whole anime angle on the clothes, party cards, etc. has been beaten to death in the last couple of years, maybe they'll find something else soon to replace anime for that "cool" factor. Or I can hope. |

I heard from a great friend of mine that in Japan, if anime is copied in some way, it's considered flattering to the creators of that anime. Besides, i'm sure there was some kind of legal action taken.

Hmm.. i'm not sure if 'flattered' is the appropriate word.. But AFAIK the only major incident of a doujin studio being attacked by a company was shortly after Pokemon began airing in America, when Nintendo went after a studio that made a yaoi Ash/"Werewolf" (Pikachu?) doujin. There've been other lawsuits (the Candy Candy lawsuit was similar, IIRC) but I haven't read anything doujin-related on the Japanese news sites in a long time. |

I skateboard and I like Hook-Ups. I find it quite funny because it's a cheap parody of anime. It's hilarious! I agree about the crappy names but it's funny! |

I think the most recent would be Disney threating to sue the pants off any doujin circle in Japan if they were to touch their Kingdom Hearts title. Before the game came out they made this very clear. However a couple doujin have been created, and are known to sell for hundreds of dollars on auction sites. |

I've got 1 of those Hook-Ups fingerboards and I had only bought it because of the anime styled image on the bottom. I was about 7 or 8 at the time so I thought it was really cool. It's not really offensive since its not actually mocking the original image it came from. It's only offensive because those kinds of companies are cashing in on anime by ripping off the original images. People always get ripped off like this and I'd only be mad if the company was making fun of anime. I wouldn't think the creator would be very flattered if they were discredited for their work or was ripped off like that.

I dont think it's any offense at all.
American and Japanese culture are extremely diffrent. Some American anime fans like Hagakure dont like the parodying of anime. The Japanese last I checked get a kick out of it. It's less of an "offense" and more of a dislike. Maybe an offense to you, but probably not the anime community and certainly not to the creators in Japan, whom most are honored to have their anime parodied *SD Gundam, anyone?* |

Sunrise are honoured to parody themselves? |

Bad example.
I'll edit this in a minute after I think of a better one. EDIT: Like the green coat, red coat Lupin the Third parody from Furi Kuri. Last edited by RedvsBlue on Tue Aug 31, 2004 8:53 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I don't see what is so offensive; I don't see a problem at all, particularly with the name-changing. This sounds like that one problem people have with small dub inconsistencies; not that big of a deal at all.

That's disturbing. I usually even check the post dates to make sure I'm not posting in a topic more then 5 days old. Who revived it? |
