Hi guys,
This is a question from me personally as a fan of video games. ^^
This is purely out of curiosity out of a conversation a few friends and I had the other day. We talked about what kinds of visual novels "sell" in North America. Things like Steins;Gate, Hatoful Boyfriend, and even now The Fruit of Grisaia have gotten quite a bit of attention. I mentioned that all three of these visual novels sold because, as one point, they have a protagonist with a defined personality.
Normally, Japanese visual novels are made for the player to become the protagonist, so they are made as quiet and bland as possible. One of my friends mentioned that he thought that these kind of games would be more popular, due to the mentality that the western audience likes to be part of the world of the game in order to escape reality.
So, here's my question... If you were to look for the PERFECT visual novel to play, would you prefer a protagonist (who will be unvoiced, most likely) who has a very defined and interesting personality (therefore making him his own entity and person, and not a vessel for the player to take over), or would you instead like a blank slate protagonist who you can take over and become?
Just a bit of discussion, because I'd really like to hear different opinions. Lemme hear 'em!
Just as a note, some of my favorite visual novels include Ever17, Monochrome (RIP Kid), True Remembrance, and Neo Angelique. I also enjoy The Fruit of Grisaia.
