What the heck is Shin Angyo Onshi you wonder? Well, I thought the same when I first happened upon it, though I didn't so much happen upon it as I hit a gold mine.
But that is of no matter, what matters is this amazing title which I've had the joy of discovering, and now, want to share with others. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k294/Ulquiorra64/SAO-v07Cover.jpg Shin Angyo Onshi is the story of Munsu, an angyo onshi: a government agent of the country of Jushin who traveled in secret and rooted out corrupt officials and warlords to restore the peace and bring justice to the people. However, at the onset of this story, Jushin has fallen, and Munsu wanders the ruined country cleaning up the shattered remains of the once glorious country. This work is the brainchild of writer In-Wan Youn and artist Kyung-Il Yang, serialized in Sunday GX which is published by Shogakukan. Both In-Wan Youn and Kyung-Il Yang grew up reading and enjoying manga despite not knowing much about Japanese culture. In the same way, they believed that Japanese readers would enjoy reading a work drawn from a Korean cultural background as long as it was interesting. In this fashion, they have seamlessly integrated an eclectic array of Korean culture and folklore into an amazingly woven tale. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k294/Ulquiorra64/SAO-v08p001.jpg They work close together with their editor, referred to as N-san, and streamline the plot into an easily absorbable and appreciated form. They also provide very informative and interesting author's notes at the end of the volumes/chapters at times. This isn't simply a retelling of classical folktales, far from it. The story is dark and twisting and a unique product of its own. From the onset of the very first chapter we have a plot twist and the ugly face of the remnants of a ruined country. Moral dilemmas and plenty of action is all abound. The story is seemingly episodic at first, but soon enough ties together into a much larger plot. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k294/Ulquiorra64/SAO-v08c14p009.png The characters who drive the plot are also wonderfully developed. Munsu is an anti-hero as much as an anti-hero gets. His stout stance in his principles and seeming lack of morality and kindness at times--much to the dismay of the "helpless"--hide a darker past. Sando, his "bodyguard" is a complete 180 from him: innocent, naive, and sweet, she is often taken aback at Munsu's seemingly incoherent acts. What I love about this series is that while it contains elements of fantasy, it still remains very believable. Munsu is not a man who can whip out an energy blast. Instead he fights with his head and his guns. The art is also fantastic, it's as if I'm reading a series with the artwork of Takeshi Obata but even more detailed, refined, yet rough at times. One could get into series for the art alone. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k294/Ulquiorra64/SAO-v11c20-part1p089.png The plot never seems to slow down, much like Claymore once it got to the Teresa Arc. Just full steam ahead and no fillers, indeed, no chapter is wasted on filler, only more development. In fact, this is a series often compared to Claymore and Berserk. It's finished its run at 17 volumes this year, and I eagerly await the day when a competent publisher licenses this series and does it justice. I can't wait for an anime adaptation either, provided there ever will be one. [EDIT: LINK TO SCANLATIONS REMOVED. Also, images changed to links to reduce loading times for users with slow connections.~Zalis] I've barely scratched the surface of the series here, so please check out this wonderful title, and tell people about it. |

There seems to be a movie, but that's just about it. Either way, you've inspired me (twice?) to look into this series. I would prefer to read it off the shelves rather than online, so I hope any company decides to pick it up soon. The art really looks amazing when viewing the images you've provided. I usually don't read too many series of this kind of genre, but for some reason I find myself very interested in Shin Angyo Onshi. To be honest, I don't think I've ever read manhwa before. But I doubt is better than Naruto. Believe it, yo! |

Hmmm, definitely looks like an interesting one, that's for sure. It looks like it could have the feel of something like Trigun or Gungrave maybe. And if it's anything like Claymore or Berserk like you say, I'd say there's plenty of reason for me to like it. Definitely going to check this one out eventually, but like AG said, probably in the form of a U.S. release straight from the shelves rather than through scans.
I second that! |

And as much as I love[d] Naruto, this series is just on another level altogether. It's kind of like The Simpsons versus The Sopranos. |

But we don't even know the chances or time-frame of such a license. I'd think that Del Rey or Dark Horse would pick it up, if it wasn't Infinity Studios. But IS seems to have a hard time getting material out to the people to be recognized and has little shelf space in brick and mortar stores. I can only hope for the best, but in the meanwhile, I wouldn't mind importing this because the volumes seriously look nice with plenty of color pages and artist sketches included. CLAMP even provided a guest color spread in one of the middle volumes. |

Up until I saw your post in the What Are You Reading thread, I was only vaguely aware of the anime and not the slightest bit familiar with the manga. After reading that and this post, you've sold me on it. I hope this gets licensed, I'll definitely pick it up.
I just dropped Naruto after 16 volumes (would have been 15, but I had thought I had cancelled 16 and hadn't). I'm unsure whether I'm going to finish reading Naruto or watch Shippuden or perhaps neither. I was never a huge Naruto fan, and Naruto is just too damn long for the amount of interest I have in it. But Shin Angyo Onshi looks awesome and I've only seen a couple pages of it. At the very least, the art is excellent. And I'll take dark antiheroes over annoying brats in orange jumpsuits any day (yeah, I was always more of a Sasuke fan). |

Eh, that's fine with me. I'm not the kind of Naruto fan that goes berserk when someone doesn't like the series; it's all just an opinion. I've recently given up on Bleach.
I want to check out more series that are not so popular because a lot of my favorites are being labeled as "overrated" these days. SharinganEye definitely did a good job selling this one to me, as well. Newtype USA had a two-page spread on the movie, so I'm sure it (the manga) will be picked up by someone eventually. Sasuke? Bleh. |

Isn't Shogakukan one of the companies Viz has in the bag?
If so, Shin Angyo Onshi has lousy odds of coming over here by anyone other than Viz and Viz doesn't want to do it, its unlikely anyone else will get the option. @Sharingan: How does this title fair in terms of violence and sexual content? Based on one picture I saw, which wasn't explicit but borderline and I don't know what came after it, I don't think this is something I want in Viz's hands. |

Shin Angyo Onshi is a seinen series, so it has its fair share of blood and violence. Nothing superficial, but there are definitely moments where it might make some cringe not at the amount of blood, but in the manner of violence depicted.
The overall level of blood is no worse than the worst of Claymore or One Piece, but the violence is more "shocking" at times. Decapitations and headshots are not that uncommon in this series, though I wouldn't compare it to stuff in say, Elfen Lied. A battle scene in the spoiler[war with Kaidaiten] has some epic scenes, much like what one found in LOTR. As for sexuality and nudity, it's fairly tame compared to others I've read, especially something like Berserk and Elfen Lied. There are a couple of sex scenes, but it's very mild, and nudity is rather infrequent, though fanservice does exist. But nothing like panty shots or random naked characters, you find the fanservice in this series in the skimpy clothings of maybe 3 or so female characters. Mainly in Sando. If VIZ can handle Claymore and Hagaren decently, I can only hope they will do so with this too, if it goes into their hands. |

Its the other way around. But I don't see how SAO is similar to Naruto. I could name dozens of manga that I think are better than Naruto, but unless they has similar plot or genre elements it wouldn't have much of a purpose. As for the actual manga, the couple chapters I've read have been solid, but I can't really give much more of an opinion until I read more. |

It's also a little depressing when any good series goes unnoticed due to being pushed out by larger, more mainstream titles. Not that I have anything against titles like Naruto and Bleach, generally. |

Having your favorite titles go unnoticed due to overrated ones is something you just have to get used to as an anime/manga fan Well I'm currently halfway through the SAO manga and it's also become one of my faves thanks to Munsu's unpredictable behavior.

I see, thanks. If its seinen, maybe they would put it in their Signature line. But if the violence is no worse than Claymore, they could easily get away with the SJA line or the 'standard' line, both of which are subject to editing. The violence level sounds like it might be on par with Flame or Recca or only slightly more brutal. Ugh.
Someone (other than Viz), please license this NOW.
ANY nudity means it is liable to be edited by Viz. Like I said, it sounds on par with Flame of Recca, which still gets the nudity edited out starting with volume 16 or 20 (depends on whether or not 16 was actually edited, which I haven't been able to confirm).
I'm not concerned about the skimpy clothing, but nudity is nudity, so there is still a good chance of Viz editing.
It certainly sounds like something Viz would consider, which worries me. It might be safe if they put it in their Signature line, but I think it is more likely to go in the SJA line, which would have a good chance of getting edited. |

Well the last time I read it I was upto the beginning of Volume 6 but that was so long ago (4 months). I will start reading it again soon, from the beginning, so that I can get back into it.
