Shiflan, it seems it actually exists. There are a bunch of screenshots available here, and there is something from the franchise shown here that includes the words "original video animation" in English on the cover. Also, it has pages on many sites other than Wikipedia such as this Allcinema page.

I was just reading about this series on Wikipedia and according to the Wiki there is yet another OVA that was released between the two called ""電脳戦隊ヴギィ’ズ・エンジェル外伝 進め!スーパー・エンジェルス!", or "Voogie's Angel Super Angels".

This is probably the episode in which the characters appear in super-deformed format. I don't believe it was ever released in Region 1. I recall seeing a few clips someone brought back from Japan.

There was also a drama CD which I believe preceded the three episode OVA and the movie.

A rare Gulliver's Travels anime?

I searched and searched in an every bit of the internet, found every possible animated Gulliver out there, but could not find a glimpse of reminiscent of this particular one:
...

So, what is this mystery? Could this be a scene within another anime? A movie? An OVA? A pilot?

I don't recognize this particular adaptation of Gulliver's Travels. However, there are some anime versions I haven't seen, including the 1983 release in the Manga Sekai Mukashi Banashi (Manga Fairy Tales of the World) series, and the one in the 1988 series Video Picture Books.
Perhaps someone here has seen these and can comment on whether this depiction of Gulliver originates from one of those versions.

hyojodoji, pibburns, and Calathan: Thank you!

It seems that it is indeed a real OVA, just a very obscure one!

The proper way to stab someone?

In one of the anime in the current Preview guide, spoiler[Erased,] we see someone stabbed with a large knife.

In most US movies and comics if someone is trying to stab another, they are usually holding the knife in one hand with the arm partially extended. They use the strength of the arm and in some cases the momentum of a swing to insert the knife. They are usually at arms length when they connect.

In the show mentioned above, and in other anime, they seem to consistently hold the knife in both hands at the waist level and walk or run at the victim. They almost seem to brace the handle of the knife on their body. They end up close enough to embrace the victim.

Does anyone know if this technique shows up in Japanese live action films? Any idea how this became a convention? Killing a person with a knife requires you to get up close and personal but this takes that to an extreme. You would be likely to get blood on yourself.

In yakuza-related fiction (including movies), you can occasionally see that 'holding the knife in both hands at the waist level and walking or running at the victim' way of using dosu (dagger). This is a way to utilise the weight of the person who stabs.
Probably this style used in yakuza-related fiction influences mangaka and anime filmmakers.

@hyojodoji

Yakuza fiction. That would explain how it got to anime. It always struck me as something that would be done by someone unused to a knife as a weapon. I can see it used where a boss gives an underling a knife and says "kill that person".

Thanks for the information.

You see people in anime kill each other with swords that way as well, so maybe it's partially an extrapolation from sword technique to knife technique. Also, I'd think you'd be more likely to kill with an impaling wound to the center than a slash cut, or a stab to the upper body, which is where you hit with an overhand strike with a knife (assuming they don't block the swing with their arms).

Really, the two-handed up-close attack seems to me like it would be more effective, as long as you didn't care about getting lots of blood on yourself. Which you wouldn't as long as you didn't pull the knife out for a second strike.

Interesting observation. Kind of like how it bugs me that no one in anime ever knocks on a door with their fist facing the door, it's always the back of the hand toward the door. Smile

In a scene of Rokudenashi Blues, a well-known manga about delinquent students, a yakuza stabs a principal character in a hurling-oneself style.
Also in Shōwa Zankyōden (1965. Dir. by Saeki Kiyoshi. Starring Takakura Ken), a famous yakuza film, you can see the hurling-oneself style of using a dagger.

@Gina Szanboti

According to a close combat instructor I once had (he was supervising pistol practice for our group) an overhead slash with a knife is a bad idea. The ribs overlap like venetian blinds and will cause your knife to skitter down the chest. This causes a painful but survivable wound. He recommended coming up at an angle as the ribs would guide the weapon in. He also recommended aiming for a point just below the rib cage and a few inches above the belt buckle. If you hit the solar plexus it immobilizes the target from shock. (ever had the wind knocked out of you?) Interestingly, people stabbed or cut with a very sharp knife often report not feeling the injury until much later.

The problem with striking the lower abdomen is that it doesn't immediately kill unless you are lucky enough to hit a major artery. Before antibiotics any thing that opened the intestines would most likely kill through infection but very slowly and painfully. That is why someone committing ritual suicide had a helper to cut his head off.

I hadn't noticed the knocking gesture, I'll have to look for that. That is like the "come here" motion with the palm down instead of our palm up version.
