More Mekaku City Actors...

Idk how to feel about this. The first season imo got mixed reactions so we'll see.I do like some of the music from the franchise though.

NO! NO. No more freaking insulting butchery of the source material! Stop it! Stop it!
Was it not enough for you to ruin every single character the first time?

Was this show really that bad? The first episode confused the shit out of me and I dropped it.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for Aniplex of America to release the first season.

For anyone unfamiliar with the source material, it was just a dreadful bore of never ending, uninteresting monologues about the story that still said basically nothing. And the first episode is unfortunately the best one out of the bunch.
And for anyone who was a fan of the source material it was even worse.

It's also one of Shaft's worst works from a technical standpoint, too. Dramatic moment? Eh, just have the shot be of the characters standing really far apart from each other and shouting so that you literally don't have to animate anything.
Monologue?(which is 70% of the show) Just have it blandly show them talking, and then cut to a cheap "shaft cut" every few seconds to distract people from how terrible your animation is.

Basically, Shaft lazily tried to do the same style with this show as it did with Bakemonogatari, but it had none of that series' wit and soul. There was zero interesting dialogue, characters were hamfisted into the narrative, and the animation was lazy and uninteresting. Shaft went on to ruin Nisekoi the same way.
At one point the anime even ran out of ideas, said "fudge it" and just rubbed a bunch of manga pages in our faces. Literally just showing off pages from the manga to remind us how much better that thing is than the anime.
Add to that how it outright ruined the character arcs of certain characters, and a ton of unexplained nonsense and plot holes in the story that were invented only for the anime, and you have what was one of the worst series of 2014.
Oh, and the music was crap. Subpar covers of songs from the source material(which were also hamfisted), and the general OST was completely and utterly bland. And this is the adaptation of a series of music videos that are actually good.

The only good thing about it is the OP and ED. The OP was not directed by Shaft, but instead directed by the animator of the original music videos. (and shaft couldn't even finish animating it in time, so the first few weeks had an OP lacking tons of visuals)
The OP and the ED respectively do more "show, don't tell" storytelling than the whole season. Seriously.
Characterization? Done better, and subtly.
Plot points? Done better.
Style? Done better.
Easter eggs and tiny details with big relevance? The OP delivers.
Fun? Done way better.
And the full ED is a tearjerker for fans of the source.

I have literally spent more time listening to cover version of those songs than it took me to actually complete that dreadful show.

Hoo boy. This is....this....um?

I don't even know how to feel about this. On the one hand, the first adaptation was impressively bad, with maybe one or two good episodes out of 12.

It had very few of the meaningful Blindfold Gang interactions I was there for, a complete focus on getting to the end and shooting plot points at the viewer--at the risk of never letting the audience get to know the characters, and the last episodes consisted of spoiler[characters spouting exposition while running through ugly, identical hallways in a vaguely-defined underground laboratory--though I might be biased against this since something similar miiiight have happened in one of the more terrible things I wrote in high school]).

A new adaptation might be the best thing for the franchise, but on the other hand...hooooooooooo boy this might be a bad idea.

Is....is SHAFT involved this time?

Fab news, I adored the anime despite not having read the books (still haven't) so more is always welcome. Confusing in parts but rewatching answered most questions I had.

Now if only someone could release the anime physically. AoA don't wanna yet we got awful shows like Samurai Flamenco here in the UK but not this. Baffling.

I could actually conceivably be persuaded to believe the anime might not be hot garbage if it turns out Shaft isn't involved.
But I doubt it. I just hope we get to see Jin's next project soon.

I think a lot of the confusion that people had with the anime is that each episode is based on each kagepro song. And its a lot more easier to follow the anime once you`ve seen the MVs...

More follow ups to bad anime based on niconico subculture memes that nobody I'm aware of asked for because commercialism. If this had been a year ago I would have been stunned, now I'm just not even surprised and it's why I barely expect anything from this industry anymore. All they ever do anymore really are weird niche yet commercially viable thanks to obsessive fanbase in Japan things nowadays and because Aniplex controls the industry and just does whatever for production committee politics reasons. It's just sad but again expected nowadays.

You all do realize that the original creator Jin was heavily involved in the Mekakucity Actors anime, right? Look at his credits page. He was in charge of series composition, wrote the script, and is credited with music producer and theme song composition.

I don't know much about the franchise but it's pretty ignorant to just blame it all on the studio.

Hoping it's a second season, I really liked the first and can't really understand why it's know as a bad anime

I really liked the first season so I hope its a sequel. Yes the animation was god awful and it was very confusing especially the last few episodes but I really liked the characters and the overall unique story

I was thinking "why were people blaming shaft? I mean all they did was animate what they were told to animate."

Anyways Jin did warn people on his blog that if all you do is watch the anime & not view the music videos, read the manga/Light Novels, then yes you are going to get confused.

And you both realize Jin wasn't the anime's director, right? Nor did he get to choose how many episodes the series got, and a ton of other crucial things.
The actual style of the anime is unquestionably that of Akiyuki Shinbo's direction, whom also was the actual director.
And if Jin was put in charge of much more than that then it was still Shaft who hired him, a (at the time) 23 year old musician with no experience within the anime industry, to do so.
