Unpopular opinion but oh well but I personally loved this anime to death and still now consider it one of my favorite all time animes. The music was amazing, the animation beautiful, a great dub and I personally loved the story, I marathoned every single episode when I completed the LE bluray set as I just couldn't stop. The tonal shift in the second half was also a point that I really enjoyed and I adored Makoto as he was such a great eccentric villain. I do agree that it's a shame that Inori doesn't get a larger role though.
All in all watching this anime was a wonderful experience that I'll treasure forever

I'll probably watch this in the future. But from what I've seen, the only resemblance this series has to Evangelion is that Shu is similar to Shinji in personality and being forced into a resistance. Otherwise, the story and characters are almost identical to Code Geass, but swaps out Lelouch and CC, removes Suzaku entirely, and replaces them with the main trio of Escaflowne. Dat opening though.

I remember getting the original LE and having a nice marathon session without any issues or regrets.

You should watch the series before jumping to too many conclusions as there is far more Evangelion influence here than what you are recognizing, especially in character dynamics and the underlying subject matter of the narrative including the religious symbols, at least past the first few episodes. Shu and Shinji have a common social awkwardness that is also part of the way they interact with others and the resulting consequences tie into the story. The resistance angle is less important than it would seem at a glance. There is arguably some Eureka 7 feel too, with the internal problems within the so-called team and the protagonist's growing up process, but that is not a very deep comparison either. Either way, this was a disappointing show and I would not recommend it. |

I also loved this series to death and bought the initial release. That was definitely worth it, especially since it came with 2 art books.
The way Shu is handled is actually quite different from some one like Shinji. Shinji was the type of loner who openly avoided interacting with other people. Shu is a modern day loner, some one who knows how to outwardly pretend to be sociable but inside he maintains his emotional distance. It's not something you see that often. |

jroa already commented on this some, but yeah, a lot of the Evangelion parallels are not apparent up front. In fact, some of the strongest ones won't be obvious until near the end of the series. |

I can't really see the Evangelion parallels. It's been a long time since I've seen Evangelion, but the shows felt entirely different to me. Guilty Crown is a lot more straightforward, Eva is hard appreciate unless you're like very analytical and can understand its themes and symbolism and all that literary rocket science. I see Guilty Crown as just more of a fairly typical shounen action fare, more similar to something like the previously mentioned Eureka 7 (and perhaps its spiritual successor Xam'd), maybe. Maybe Guilty Crown has all that Eva stuff too, but if they were there they were completely lost on me, yet I could still appreciate the show. Eva just went over my head mostly.

This should have stopped at 1 cour. The entire thing went to crap starting with the 'king of school' part. I really enjoyed the first half, but knowing where things go I have no interest in watching any of it again on BD.

I remember thinking guilty crow was pretty awful but I think I'm giving it an harder time than it deserves. Comparing it to eva definitely doesn't do it any favor, but as a typical teenage angst vehicle it does the job.
The female characters are there for the harem aspect (with the usual girl who's not interested in the MC before suddenly falling in love with him), there's the usual father figure who disapprove of the main character for no real reason (in this case he double as love rival which is a bit weird) and there's the main character with the personality of a cardboard box and the empty head to go along with it. But really all those things are stuff teenager want and I most likely enjoyed those at some point, I could very well see it becoming a generation eureka seven or something like, which I think its far more similar too. The visual were very good, the sequence where he cancel gravity was pretty awesome. So I definitely think there's a good deal of enjoyment in it if you just go in with your brain turned off and eye open. |

I'm in the minority on this but I think the second half of the show was the stronger half. Shu, Ayase, and even Inori (albeit still not much) got more development and the stakes got higher near the end whereas the first half of the show mostly felt like it dragged far too often and nothing notable happened. The show did have some story problems and other issues but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. That being said it's not on the quality level of Code Geass and certainly not on the level of Evangelion in terms of what anime it seemed inspired by.

My opinions mirror Theron's for the most part. To me this is a classic example of shock and awe. Wow the audience with the shiny visuals and great music and prey they don't look too deep because they'll find a severe lack of depth. The visuals are very nice and the battle scenes are very well done. As Theron said though once you get to the story telling and actual plot,.....it's like they had a set amount of quality to use. They had 10 quality points and instead of spreading them out equally 7 of them went to the visuals and score with only 3 going to character and story. I still am shaking my head at one allegiance turn in particular. It still to this day makes no sense to me. I
enjoyed it but it's one of those series I don't know if I'd watch again anytime soon. Makes me almost regret buying both seasons on BluRay instead of just using Funi's streaming service. At least I got them cheap on sale. I will say I have seen some very nice and elaborate Inori cosplays at some cons. |

I really can't understand why people love Guilty Crown, it's just... stupid? Nonsense? Especially in the second part, where almost nothing really made any sense at all (e.g. the finale lol). And I think that it's more a ripoff of Code Geass (and that wasn't a really good show either)
