My personal best would have to be anything from Arina Tanemura (I think thats how you spell her name) When I read the story Eve's applework, a short of hers...wow! Just WOW! the anime adaptation of her work pales in comparison to her manga. She is pure concentrated shojo!

She has been hospitalized several times due to severe tendinitis of her wrist. That's the price for being the #1 manga-ka of Ribon.

I thought most famous manga-ka have assistants to help nowadays? That sad for Arina. I'll lend my karamtic pencil to her!

I've been reading Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou lately, and I have to say I really like the artwork. Especially the color pictures, Mr. Hitoshi Ashinano uses watercolors very well and mixes warm and cool tones together nicely.

Also, I love the artwork for a manga called River's End. I like the cross-hatching techniques and the nice use of color blending.

I'm a big fan of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita saga too, but my choice for manga with the best art would have to be one of Masamune Shirow's works. I have been a fan of his since I picked up the first vol of Appleseed book one back in the late 1980's, & I have followed his work right up to the present. I just love his intricate & highly detailed artwork. His story-telling may not be up to the same standard as his artwork (the plot to GitS 2: Man-Machine Interface was rather hard to decipher, took several re-reads to get a grasp around the storyline), but I think he's an amazing world builder. I'd hate to sound typical, but honestly, CLAMP has some of the best artwork in the business, most notably in Magic Knight Rayearth and X/1999.

CLAMP is just wonderful at creating fantastic worlds and breathtaking magic...

She has over a dozen. Even so, color illustrations for cover, first page, wallpaper or poster are still very demanding to a manga-ka, no matter how many assistants s/he has.

Lucky you! I wonder if my local Kinokuniya could order that for me...though it probably wouldn't come with those cool items...

I stopped reading after volume 3 or 4, because I don't feel like waiting 9+ months between volumes. When its finished (I'm guessing sometime around 2012) and I have the whole thing, then I'll read it.

Yeah, the wait can be annoying, but in some ways I think I actually like it, because not only do you get to speculate and anticipate things, but it's also similar to the experience in Japan which the manga is originally intended for (though we don't get the serialization for most titles).

I also really love Yazawa Ai's art, though not all of it. Some of the stuff that looks more computer generated isn't really my thing, but there are other pieces that she's done which are just gorgeous. Her art within the manga isn't always as impressive, though she has some really good shots.

I agree. I love CLAMP's works, old or new. I've been collection those artbook of theirs and I just love the art. The art for Clover was also really amazing and right up there with Rayearth and X/1999.

My vote goes to Inio Asano for his work on Nijigahara Holograph. Amazing stuff.

I'll second that.

Actually, even as amazing of an artist that Asano (he is the only manga-ka that I've discovered who is able to integrate photographs so deftly; puts so many others to shame), I think I might favor Jiro Taniguchi and Hideki Arai.

Examples of Taniguchi can be seen here and here. Really incredible stuff. Kagemusha and I definitely agree that he's one of, if not the most technically skilled artist in manga.

Hideki Arai (Mon from The World is Mine, one of his acclaimed masterpieces, is the character in my avatar) has to be one of the most versatile and jaw-dropping, impressive modern cartoonists that I've come across. I can't compare any manga-ka that are able to express such a wide range of facial expressions. He's simply leagues above the rest of the crowd that have such a limit on displaying emotions and frequently rely on annoying visual cues. His two-page spreads are also absolutely stunning and he doesn't overuse them at all.

hmm... I like the art of Nari Kusakawa. Her art is clean and it has that down to earth, 'I did my best though some of it isn't too well placed' feel. After Recipe for gertrude manga, though. Gert sucks.

I also think Pink Hanamori (Mermaid Melody) has great art.

I love the art-style used in the FLCL manga. It's so quirky and well-done.

The most realistic in my opinion is Death Note (No huge shiny eyes) for the most part. There are a few scenes that aren't done well, but it's not a big deal.

Another good one is Gantz (which comes out next summer from Dark Horse) but they use computers on that one, so I'm not sure if I would count it.

Not a manga, but I also like the Haruhi Suzumiya novel covers. I wish someone would license them.

The best manga artwork I've seen to date is that by Masamune Shirow. I love his graceful, realistic, yet at the same time cartoony style, and my God, those backgrounds!!! When I first opened my copy of the first volume of Appleseed, I was momentarily paralyzed by the level of detail in the backgrounds, and I couldn't turn a page without just sort of soaking in all the detail before I actually read the words. The worlds Masamune Shirow creates are incredibly gritty and real and, quite frankly, plausible. I also love his character designs, even if all of his heroines are basically variations on the same character :p
