Are the characters they’re showing off now just side characters, or is this more like each group is a pairing in itself based around the concept of the show? (If anyone is confused by what I just said: think like Junjou Romantica and how they had three different sets of plots that came together to make the whole show)

Yes, these last two are just minor side characters. The previous 4 are the main protagonists and their close friends.
