At the end of the day, Mashima's works are character driven and you liking or hating his works are enterally based on how much you love said characters.
Fortunately, he is very good with character interactions and emotional payoffs, though, I would say Eden's Zero it's the first of his series where he really tries to write a proper long reaching plot with a complicated world building and I would say he is mostly successful.

One thing I take for granted about this series is how far it is out of Mashima's comfort zone. Not just in the genre of space and science fantasy instead of classic fantasy, but also his willingness to take readers and viewers to more discomforting places again like he did before Fairy Tail. This is by far his harshest, most mean-spirited series to date, which only makes it more encouraging to see his protagonists find the strength to press through it all. That's one thing I hope Mashima never forgets about Edens Zero, and from what's in store for future seaaons, he may not anytime soon.
