I’m a lifelong Godzilla fan dating back to the sixties. I’ve enjoyed, even loved almost everything Godzilla, up to and including Emmerich’s uneven mess of a film. Honda’s 1954 original film has been the height of the franchise for me and it is still a classic. That said, Yamazaki’s new Minus One brings so many positives. A story grounded in post World War II history including numerous period details (those historically accurate Japanese warships!). Effective special effects and direction that allows the audience to appreciate those effects. And a human cast that makes you care about them. Ryunosuke Kamiki’s Koichi, all guilt and PTSD, made me CARE. This is a good, even great MOVIE, not merely a great Godzilla movie.
