Okay, seems like mods have taken a swift action on those spam posts just now.
Mayve new accounts would need some verification for both email and number before posting. |

Yeah, I've been reporting those spam posts ever since they popped up on ANN forum, and I kept wondering where the heck are the mods/admins to take care of that since the mod teams are usually quick to eliminate spam post thread the moment they start appearing. From my experience being on ANN for 18 years, I never seen such long delay to eliminate spam post thread on this forum. But at least they're gone, but the delay was... something I've never seen before on this thread throughout my 18 years as a forumite user.

Guess even spam accounts can essily make an account here and immediately create a post directly.

Thing is, how are they allowed anyone to create a post in Talkback when there's hardly any user-created post in that thread when each posts are tied to every ANN posts? Most of those user-made posts in Talkback are usually moved to other threads or outright removed.

Most of the spam was in the Series Discussion subforum, actually.
Anyway, I'd actually been thinking that I'd been doing a better-than-usual job on spam patrol tonight, if only because I've been able to take down most of these spam posts within about 30 minutes of them appearing (sometimes we don't see them for hours, depending on how many mods are active). You've probably just been seeing multiple different spam posts tonight, because they've been coming in waves. I think at least one other mod has been actively cleaning things up tonight, but for my part, alone, I'd estimate that I've taken down well over 600 spam threads and blocked several dozen accounts/IPs. (EDIT: I counted 535 after the second big wave, and there's since been a third.) Based on prior spam deluges, I anticipate this being a problem for the rest of the weekend, at least. As such there will very likely be some gaps where no mods are currently active, so you may see some spam thread sticking around for longer, but I can promise you that we'll be taking care of everything as quickly as we can. --F |

Thank you for this little info on the spam progress. I'm sorry if I go a bit slightly off topic tangent here, and it's not a spam post issue. But I've reported several off-topic banters (which I'm a bit guilty of doing on there too) on this thread, and not a single mod have came to address or clean up any off topic banter (that includes the OP). Could you or maybe one of the mod take care of this, I've reported all the off topic/troubling post since Wednesday and it's still there? |

Spam bots are still active, and they're targeting the general discussion forum as well. Not sure if the website is going to consider some kind of temporary block on new accounts until the spammers lose interest.

I've also been logging on multiple times a day & removed a similar number of posts & accounts. We're doing what we can. --W. |

I can't believe I have to say this but: I 100% 2nd this idea!!! However, I'm also worried that by doing that it could lead to spammer to hack and hijack regular ANN users account (which includes mine too) and using them to post spam posts by proxy given that ANN hasn't implemented a 2-factor authentication to prevent that (something I raise concern about in a thread back in Jan). |

Relax people. The Mods are doing an excellent job of clearing out the spam.
At its worst, the spam is a minor irritation. There is no need to adopt "cures" that are a bigger problem than the spam. There is also no need to make access more difficult than now. I sincerely hope that if two factor authentication is ever offered that it would be voluntary. This isn't a financial site. Make yourself a suitably long/strong password that you don't use on other sites and cool it. |
