With less than two weeks before the release of a Switch 2 the hardware and software numbers for the Switch and PS5 have shrunk quite a bit, but are still interesting.
First of all, Capcom Fighting Collection 2 on Switch sold a thousand more copies that what City of the Woves sold in two weeks, if we add the PS4 version sales, in total it sold about 11,985 copies, which doesn't seem like a lot, but it's more or less what some other fighting games have sold on individual consoles before, like Guity Gear Strive on the PS4 (11,772) or Street Fighter 6 on PS4 as well (12,078). Not saying that maybe City of the Wolves would have been success if it had come out on the Switch, but maybe it'd have helped.
Now, the pre-order numbers for the Switch 2 in Japan are very good, but only for Nintendo games, the third-party games do not stand out that much, although that is something that always happens with the new Nintendo consoles, third-party developers don't have that much to offer outside of late ports, and most of the lauch line-up is comprised of games that don't have that much appeal to Japanese gamers, like Cyberpunk 2077, despite being one of the most impressive ports, the game itself doesn't seem to be that popular in Japan.

Oof, City of Wolves getting out sold by a collection (mind you, a great collection) of old Fighting games. Really feel bad for those guys and the fans really after all those years and the game is great but marketing "mistakes" doomed it.

Nah it one issue more then the others. NO ONE KNOWS WHO SNK ARE and those that do have memories from 30 years ago or emu memories and now SNK has to fight Capcom with being able to under cut the cost of Capcom's hardware and at the same price.

People don’t know who SNK are and that’s why COTW failed?

Hasn’t Clair Obscur been kicking all sorts of ass the last few weeks despite being from a developer and publisher no one has heard of?

Pretty much. Anyone expecting an SNK game to sell well hasn't been paying attention to SNK for the past 25 years. Which coincidentally was the last time a Fatal Fury game came out. King of Fighters XV barely sold any better. No one care abouts SNK but diehard fans.

You can't compare an RPG to a fighting game. RPGs are a popular genre that are easy to get into while fighting games are not popular and are some of the most daunting and challenging games to get into with steep learning curves and little value if you don't plan on playing multiplayer. Now, if there was an indie fighting game not attached to any existing IP that sold 3 million copies in a month then that'd be impressive.

Clair Obscur also has many things going for it such a immense word of mouth and the selling point that it's a JRPG for people who don't like JRPGs. Which also might explain why it's not doing similar gangbusters in Japan since "JRPG if you hate Japan" might not be the best selling point for them. Not knocking the game or anything but a lot of praise for it is basically hating on JRPGs. I've already seeing the complaints about it's poor sales in Japan being because it has an adult cast and doesn't let you date the underage character and other stereotypical thing people like to complain about Japan.

It's also a feel good success story of devs who left the evil Ubisoft and were told they'd never make it out in the gaming world and then they do in fact make it and showed up AAA companies with a dev studio of 30 people. Meanwhile Fatal Fury is a Japanese fighting game in a sea of other Japanese fighting games where people only play Street Fighter anyway because it's the biggest and most recognizable one. The best you can hope for is an SNK VS Capcom game doing well because it has Capcom's name on it.

Japan Times has an article about this:

"Uh-oh, is the rest of the world making JRPGs better than Japan?"

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/05/24/digital/jrpg-japan-decline-clair-obscur-expedition-33/

Quote:
By critical metrics, the last truly great Japanese-developed JRPG was 2016’s Persona 5 (with honorable mention to 2019’s Kingdom Hearts III). Last year’s Metaphor: ReFantazio was an admirable stab at a new story and setting from former Persona devs, but otherwise, the domestic JRPG scene has since become dominated by remasters and remakes. Industry giant Square Enix is preoccupied not only with sticking the landing on the third and final installment of its multipart remake of 1997’s Final Fantasy VII, but it’s also working on a remake of the original Dragon Quest (1986) and Dragon Quest II (1988) — following up a similar reworking of Dragon Quest III (1988) released earlier this year.

This is hardly a problem specific to Square Enix. Over at Nintendo, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition released in March, remaking the 2015 game of the same name

It’s not that these remasters and re-releases make for objectively bad games, but they do little to move JRPGs as a genre forward. The plucky studios of Japan’s past have since become or been subsumed into giant corporations, whose inexorable profit motive rewards commoditization of nostalgia over creative and financial risks aimed at the future.

Ummmm I wasn’t trying to simply illustrating an example of the fact you can be unknown as publisher and a developer and still make a successful product.

……RPG’s being popular hasn’t always meant success. Hence why you have a lot of games in the genre that never got popular even if they were decent to good games or those that did falling off after one sequel or such. I also would not say with a straight face every RPG is easy to get into as some can be complex and difficult depending on certain aspects.

Are we going to sit here and ignore the fact that the history of fighting game includes stuff like Street Fighter 2 one of the best selling games on the Super Nintendo or that Tekken 8 has been a success for B/N recent outrage notwithstanding….or of course Super Smash Bros?

The Shin Megami Tensei games and their various spin-offs are literally among one of the most daunting and challenging games with steep learning curves to the point modern entries have DLC to make the games easier.

Hell a lot of RPGs be they older or more recent ones can be difficult enough to where beating the game blind with no guide could be an exercise in frustration and tedium.

Let’s not move the goalposts SNK’s not an indie publisher, and my comment had no prerequisites stating that you need to be an indie developer to turn a profit you just in the words of Nate have to be a publisher/developer no one’s heard of.

Which is interesting since the director of the game mentions Final Fantasy 8 being one of his favorite games that made him fall in love with the genre. And the game said to take inspiration from other Final Fantasy’s

But they hate JRPG’s?

Didn’t work too well for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

The people who actually made the game love JRPGS. It's the fans or other people who are using the game as a weapon to attack JRPGs or Japan as a whole.

Despite its terrible launch, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is actually the highest selling Marvel vs. Capcom game now. Capcom's 49th highest selling game overall. Possibly due to there being a lot of bad Marvel movies and comics these days with people wanting something remotely good with those characters. There's Maximillion's PC edit too.

FF COTW, I enjoy the game for what it is but the screen tears on the PS4 version in 2025 are seriously inexcusable.

Which is funny since one of the issues I remember seeing people lobby against the game was throwing characters like Captain Marvel and Black Panther into the game being they were getting live action films…..yet no one complained about Gamora who had been a few years removed from having been in a live action GOTG film.
