It just occurred to me, but I wonder if this is meant to play on Japanese comedy shows where a group of comedians are in a high school wearing uniforms and weird stuff keeps happening for them to react to?

It’s not as funny as the main series but I’ve been loving all the throwbacks
Zura still on standby in 2025 |

I think my favorite jokes were all on Episode 2:
"-Q5. Yell the disc-shaped attack of Gurillin" "Kienzan!" "Kienzan!" "Dodonpa!" "Kienzan" "So that's the reason for the screaming... Ey, someone made a big mistake. " And the Confessional scene between Hijikata-Gintoki. "I don't like being a student and having to show respect to YOU. So let's shake things up and make me a teacher instead" "Yeah, you could be Mayora-sensei and use a Mayonese marker" "Heh... really? That sounds nice, Mayo pencils, Mayo boards, Mayo skirts, Mayo, Mayo, Mayo" |

I barely made it through the first two episodes, and didn't laugh once, though the ep1 intro was pretty good. I always really enjoyed the Ginpachi-sensei shorts, and I love Gintoki in glasses, but the try-hard in this is excruciating to watch. And making the aliens the principal and his aide is not a step up. I've always hated them (mainly because his voice grates on my last nerve), and not having them in many episodes was a blessing. I wish they'd made the shogun the principal or something.
I stuck around for the return of Takasugi, and it was worth it, but if ep 4 reverts back to the level of the first two, I'm out. |

Honestly, it seems this was the easiest way to make a spinoff without a budget. They almost every scene at school with almost no music. Still, it feels the cast was nerfed to the same basic gags from season 1 as Hijikata is only obsessed with mayo, Sogo wants to troll Hijikata and Kondo is still obsessed. Shinpachi wanted to become a serious character is more rare but they try pulling that joke before until they perfected it with the movie Farewell Yorozuya.

Interesting. I had the opposite experience. For me, the first episode was average, the second episode was really enjoyable, and the third episode was (unfortunately) mostly a bore. |

I think it's probably because I always liked the original series best when they got serious or sentimental. It's not that I can't appreciate its humor - its parodies of other series and tropes were some of Gintama at its best. But I've never really cared for its scatological tendencies, except when they sometimes cranked it up to 12 and beyond. And sometimes it got just a little too mean-spirited for me.
So the first two episodes really leaned hard into all the stuff about Gintama that I never liked in the first place I guess. Even with the outrageous stuff, you really never knew where the show would take it, or how far, or where it would end up. Ginpachi just picked up memes and sat on them until it was obvious they weren't going anywhere with them except to remind people of various characters' signature quirks. That to me was boring. Whereas the 3rd ep did some creative but still funny call-backs to the more serious arcs. |

I found the first two episodes pretty funny, but the third less so. Still, looking forward to more.
Personally I always liked how Gintama handled both the comedy and drama better than most, though I definitely lean toward the comedy side if I had to chose between the two. |

The funniest thing to come out of the latest episode is the Gintama channel posting episode 96 of My Hero Academia on their YouTube channel lmao

Honestly the ending was the worst part. If the guy was a ghost... Then he actually killed himself? It's not the first time Gintama used suicide as a joke as around its third year, Kondo and Shinpachi's letter friend nearly killed themselves outta shame

Decently being too harsh on this series. It's hilarious, yeah the 7 wonder episode wasn't as good but it was still pretty funny. True Gintama fans would see that.

Yeah. This was ten times better than the ghosts and the suicidal teenager. It's nice seeing Sakamoto considering how crazy he is but I found confused with how they portray Tsukuyo as a teacher. Ironically the Shinsengumi were quite competent despite how ridiculously brutal Okita is in the original series.

Honestly, this episode failed liked it tried too hard to pull emotional moments since Sorachi barely cared about Kondo's feelings in the original series and the spinoff of course would never do anything new. Same with removing Shinpachi in the sixth episode felt too forced especially when Zura tried singing. Maybe Gintama is better at doing absurd humor or serious content sometimes. They are good at doing emotional content sometimes but that didn't work this week. Can't tell if it's because of change of writer or just the setting doesn't make sense

It seems Netflix licensed this spinoff but I don't know in what region. Still, I wonder what is the length considering Gintama always delivered lots of episodes. I recall one of the novels was basically made to promote the movie Farewell Yorozuya resulting in the idea of two Ginpachi senseis
