Episode 4

I'm enjoying this too, but I have a gripe that is probably unique to myself... the escape pod that now houses Yukio's downloaded consciousness seems to be wearing a red Speedo... the type of swimwear we used to derisively refer to as a "banana hammock." It bugs me every time I see it.

I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to look like fundoshi, traditional Japanese underwear, which really isn’t that much different.

That's what I figured. I assume it's supposed to call to mind the garb that sumo wrestlers wear and that sort of grosses me out given that I'm not into looking at scantily clad fat dudes. Yukio's garb squicks me out much the way elongated elf ears do Edjwald.

I hadn't even noticed that part of the mech design, though given the comedy angle of the series, it's defenitly intentional.

To the main storyspoiler[The series really does a great job filling in worldbuilding without feeling too rushed. Ao's backstory was very well done, and its neat to see the diifferent tools humanity has in it's fight against the Kaiju. ]

The show has an interesting world, and its nice to see the worldbuilding fully expore this.

spoiler[next episode seems like more of a breather episode that showcases the characters home at the Mall/School]

For some reason, this made me think of that old Jack Handey quote:

"To me clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus and a clown killed my dad."

I am glad grossout humor really isn't prominent in this show for the most part.

More on this what do people think of the mech design in this show? I'm not as much of a fan of the mini mecha, but I like the large scale version seen earlier on.

I liked the large version, too. Yukio's face in that form reminded a little bit of Iron Man. I'm hoping the current escape pod mode will "grow" somehow.

I think the show did itself a favor by having the first kaiju dealt with by a backhoe. It really lowered the bar for what was and wasn't acceptable as a mecha companion. That said, maybe when the MC meets the whispered about remnants of the defense force, some upgrades will be possible.

When I saw those big, green, humanoid tank-looking mecha in Captain Nutjob's flashback scene to an earlier military post, I gained some hope that our MC won't be stuck waddling around in a giant egg with short arms and legs for the rest of the series.

The whole bit with the weird, convoluted, kaiju binding/taming evolution thing made me wonder if the original scenario with the ice apocalypse wasn't the result of some mad scientists tampering with kaiju genetics too.

Its worth noting that from the original mech he went through about 4 evolutions before even getting to the space battle. So yeah, I think he will be getting upgrades as the series progresses and the conflict escalates Gurren Lagann style.

Now this episode was much more to my liking than the two-episode "Poorly designed mecha vs mediocrely drawn kaiju battle" where what passed for communication was a bunch of villainous morons hashing and rehashing motivations that couldn't survive ten solid seconds of scrutiny without falling back on the insanity defense. There were human side characters interacting, evacuation logistics, a little bit of actual conversation between the "Sucko Saviors" and the return of the original protector of the campus kicking up some drama sparks.

Last week tested me, but I'm back to looking forward to next week.

I think I enjoyed E9 more than any other single episode this season. We got very little "I'm a stupid bad man giving bad reasons for the bad things I'm doing", some good action, good fight choreo, and character growth that makes our hero easier to watch.

My issues with pacing aside, I'm hoping the rest of the season can keep these changes going forward and give potential continuations the opportunity to be above average. I was hoping the show would hit its stride before now.

I also think the last two episodes have bumped up the quality, mainly because it's brought in other characters and conflicts to break up the monotony and give the MC a chance to do something other than pull handles and look tense.

But I will not be sorry to see somebody shut up Mr. Savior Complex.
