I really want this to do well, because they've made it clear that the success of all the different parts of this initial phase will determine whether we get more Suikoden or not. But man if they think that rooftop run was a money shot I have some concerns lmao

I was gonna say, the rooftop scene was slightly ambitious, but they didn’t really pull it off.

Suikoden doesn't need to be a "sakuga fest" or "aura farming" show so I hope they don't try to do all those crazy fancy cuts all over.

I just hope they do the spoiler[ die pig and Luca's death] scenes justice.

TBH, I'm not going to watch this for the animation, only in anticipation of seeing my favorite stars, and which ending they'll choose. Very Happy

If you don't care about animation when watching anime then just read the manga they announced. Or stare at a png of Flik for 20 minutes a week, that sounds like about the same experience you describe lol

Ouch not really a fan of the way they have done the 3D characters over 2D background art, they don't blend at all and it looks like we are watching actors performing in front of a Green Screen.

Its a bit over the top as you don't really have people leaping between rooftops or double jumping up chasm walls in the games. Its more grounded real world physics for character strength, the fantastical elements are purely the rune magic.

LOL, it's the same way I can watch my poorly animated 90s favorites over and over again. That is in no way the same as staring as a picture. Also I don't like Flik.

Animation brings the characters to life, I don't need some pretentious sakuga-fest for a story I love.

I can agree, at least to some extent. When it comes to anime adaptations, I find the more transformative element is the voice acting, not the animation. Like I’ve found that there’s little difference in how I appreciate a full anime adaptation of a manga/novel versus a picture drama.

Which isn’t to say that I don’t appreciate good animation in an adaptation, rather that, for me, it’s typically a secondary aspect. And when I think of the media that’s most impressed me with its animation, most of it is original works rather than adaptations.

Possibly because I can provide my own animation for any given story perfectly well with my imagination, but cannot do the same with character voices (or performances).

Anyway, I don’t think the animation looks that iffy here. Though, granted, my expectations for anime adaptations of video games, specifically, are pretty low. Honestly I’m just happy they’re using 2D horses instead of those godawful 3DCG abominations we so frequently seem to get in low and mid-budget fantasy anime.

Im not going to spoil anything for folks who have never played the game, but the problem i see for this adaptation is the central conflict with a particular antagonist to this day still makes zero sense to me. Hopefully it becomes more realized or explained. I played the whole game trying to make sense of it and while the game was a blast to play, the resolution of this conflict made me feel like I missed something (but I didn't cause I 100% rpgs i like for the most part).

Its an interesting anime idea for sure. I dont think this is going to revive the series or anything like that. Games like Suikoden thrive on a lot of old school rpg staples and a LOT of missable content. People hate that stuff nowadays. Even i wouldn't play that kind of game without a checklist guide today because I dont have the days when I was a kid to just keep exploring every nook and cranny of every house in every town.
