The Tenchi franchise has the hardiness of a cockroach, it never seems to go away.

Lots to be skeptical about here. The extent to which the final total after taking into account things like KS's cut could even satisfactorily make a thirty minute short, how exactly that's supposed to then leverage into a "new Tenchi Muyo! series" (as though Kajishima hasn't been chugging along on new OVAs, also with Negishi mind you), why a Japanese dub is a stretch goal for a project keen on listing off the Japanese creatives involved, and how Armiger Entertainment has zero track record for animation or much of anything really
But the thing that sticks out to me is that it's trying to be a successor to Universe, the sanitized and simplified version of Tenchi Muyo made to be more TV advertiser friendly. Which doesn't really seem like a super interesting prospect in 2026 |

Respectfully disagree. I think nowadays a successor to Tenchi Universe is more interesting then more Tenchi OVA content especially since OVA 3 all but killed Tenchi Muyo in the west. Also Tenchi Universe always seemed more popular to me in the US than the OVA's. Than again I'm one of those weirdos who's favorite Tenchi series is Tenchi in Tokyo, so maybe I'm the one who's in the wrong(though I doubt it). |

Because Universe was more prominently featured on Toonami. Which says nothing about the quality or content of Universe itself, which was basically OVAs 1 and 2 but done worse. And at this point a Kickstarter Universe sequel isn't going to "revive" Tenchi in the west, so I'd rather they swing for the fences than retreat into "Tenchi Muyo without the over-complexity and weirdness that makes Tenchi Muyo in any way interesting in the modern zeitgeist" Also just framing this from the perspective of the West is weird in the first place, that just makes it seem like a cheapo fan project desperate for validation by hooking Negishi. Which maybe that's an apt descriptor, but that's also not something that screams "take my money" |

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Cause to me the OVA's are worst than Tenchi Universe. Tenchi Universe's story is more simple, but at least it remembers to keep the spotlight on Tenchi, and the girls, unlike the later OVA's where Tenchi, and the girls feel like guest stars in their own show. In all honestly it sounds like this project isn't intended for you, and that's ok. Not every anime project is for everyone. Do I think that this project will revive Tenchi, and make it a big popular series again? No I don't. I do think that this project is aimed more at the western Toonami crowd like myself who watched the first two OVA's, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo, than the diehard Masaki Kajishima portion of the fanbase. However I don't think that there's any real future for Tenchi as a franchise if it only caters to the Masaki Kajishima OVA fans either. |

I think a major issue with your framing here is the idea that these are two significant different groups of people when they aren't, the Tenchi fanbase is not nearly big enough for that (and it's very silly to think the "diehard Masaki Kajishima portion" wasn't a part of the Toonami crowd). And sure, people are allowed their preference for Universe (somebody out there has to like stale wonder bread because they ate it as a child and flavors scare them), but banking on that degree of nostalgia is not a formula for success long-term, were we even to entertain the idea that anything will come of this when they don't even have any indication of who would actually produce it |

In my time online as a member of the Tenchi Muyo fanbase I have come across two different parts of the Tenchi fandom. Heck each part had a different online forum. The fans who hate everything after OVA 3, and Tenchi GXP had their own forum(Tenchiforum), and the fans who liked the direction that Masaki Kajishima took the OVA's have their own forum(Useless Tenchi). A lot of the members of Tenchiforum got into Tenchi through watching it on Toonami. Do I think that relying on nostalgia is guaranteed to work? No. But they got to try something cause Tenchi's almost a dead franchise. If it works it works, and if it fails than at least they tried. |

I have been a fan of the Tenchi Muyo Franchise since i first saw back in the Toonami days decades ago.
The Universe Canon has always been my favourite and is the one that has aged the best out of the original series. The Ryo-ohki canon has become such a convoluted mess it is hard to get back into. Especially anything past ova 3. I really hope this campaign is successful. it will certainly help to bring the franchise back into the fold after the mess it has gotten into. |

And as I mentioned, none of that marks a significant divergence in terms of actual population size that would make dredging up Universe again instead of trying to make something new a worthwhile endeavor. Nor would I consider banking to that degree on nostalgia as really "trying" in this context, when the baseline for the project is already a reduced down version of Tenchi Muyo into a bland sci-fi adventure without distinguishing features or anything to grab people from outside the diminishing circle of people who care about Tenchi Muyo already If they seriously think they will reach a sizable enough degree of lapsed fans who vaguely remember watching Toonami as a kid that this will blossom out into a whole new full project with mass appeal, they're either fooling themselves or trying to fleece people (which the Hololive stunt casting doesn't help alleviate concerns about either) |

I'm just hoping that the project actually gets completed and released, after all the failed attempts at reboots attached to AIC's IP's (thanks for nothing, AIC Rights)... (and also hoping that aren't any additional legal issues related to copyrights, although that seems to be cleared out too - kinda hoped ANN wrote an article about this matter.) |

It is interesting that all of those had a smaller budget (each about 2/3 less) and didn't reach their goal while this Kickstarter has already raised more money in one day than any of the prior projects' goals and I assume more than all the money raised for all of the other projects combined. And tbh, of all those previous projects I think I only have heard of El-Hazard but only very vaguely. Also, I would have prefered a kickstart on a rerelease in a nice blu-ray of already released Tenchi Muyo stuff considering what Armiger's previous kickstarter. But I do feel AIC wants something new and that is hoe we ended up here. |

One thing to note is that all those projects were trough local japan crowdfunding sites and none of them allowed sponsorship from outside of japan where as with kickstarter you are getting donars/sponsoers from all over the world not just in the states. Considering it has been just a day since they announced this it is pretty good they already managed to make this much i just hope the momentum continues to reach that initial target goal. |

Yeah, I looked at the news and that cockroach comment at the top popped into my mind before I hit play on the video, but once I saw that it looks like they are specifically making this to continue some semblance of the Toonami legacy, they have my attention. I fell off of Tenchi hard after Tenchi in Tokyo, and the idea that I could pull all of those old Toonami episodes up, and then maybe have this new one to watch without too too much divergence is.... eye-catching. That Kickstarter looks like it has about as much legitimacy as Red Ash: Magicicada did about a decade ago now, but they actually got a viewable short film completed and it was in fact pleasant to watch, even if nothing else ever came of it. With that in mind, I have a handful of friends of similar age that would be excited to see Toonami's specific Tenchi return. If all this Kickstarter amounts to is a single "pilot", it does potentially have value as a proof of concept. I think that old Toonami nostalgia has never actually properly been harnessed to this day - there's a lot of properties like this that could originate from the English end of the fandom that some of the series may be neglecting to capitalise on. |
