Well, PS&G had nothing more than crude humor and disgusting visuals and it eventually got a second season. Chainsmoker Cat adds a serious and all too real counterpart to the exaggerated depiction of degradation which raises it to a higher level than mere "disgust pr0n", |

From somebody who saw Blazing Saddles in the theatres when it first came out with my best friend and my father; when the 'beans' scene appeared, two teenage boys were on the floor of the movie theatre holding our stomachs, laughing so hard we were losing our breath...let me just say, I almost did that again...this anime....crossing over the line into legendary guffaws territory, add depravity and you have a new land.

America and Hollywood are known for their raunchy comedies and pushing the envelope of taste.
Most suck and are low effort... but every now and then a genuinely good one gets through that becomes a classic. Chainsmoker Cat is in the running for being a potential classic. It also starts to make sense once you realize that OP is full of Western movie homages and even throughout the show, there are homages... I cracked up at the Leon the Professional one. 
It is precisely because it doesn't shy away from the dark side of life that juxtaposes these horrible addictions and habits and sleaze with comedy. A part of me thinks there is also some cat psychology here regarding catnip and how cats behave like they don't give a care and are just playful and easily distracted and find themselves in amusing situations... 
That's this show - a cat slice of life, except the cats are people and addicted to substances and coughing up stuff all over the place; depending on the situation they are either cute or a nuisance or both.

Look alright, I only talked about how the Beastfolk felt like a slightly more disguised version of the 'fantasy race as metaphor for unwanted & uncultured immigrant population' trope that has periodically shown up in anime and manga for decades because I find it an interesting talking point. Hell, I still like NieA Under 7, despite how blatant the aliens are an excuse to laugh at undocumented cultures failing to assimilate.
What I'm getting at, is I don't appreciate the staff seeing my tweets and deciding to find out what I care about most online and using it to punish me. And yet here am, being trolled with a Land of the Lustrous Season 2 announcement by the frickin' stinky cat anime. I don't think I've ever been so hyper specifically done dirty. Damn... |

I find it really funny that you got two "smoking" anime in the same season. One being "Tehehehe smoking is a great way to relax after work and date some cutie half your age" and the other one being "smoker are disgusting creature, slave to their drug and whiling to debase themselves just for one more puff".

Tamako Yashiro from Red Cat Ramen (Ramen Aka Neko) is capable of handling this potential problem.
We already have had an apartheid hominid/cat-humanoid scenario in Nekopara (which was disliked for the wrong reasons). |

Much like drinking, smoking can be done in moderation. Smoking also does have the coolness factor from early film and even for badass anime dudes and dudettes. But both alcohol and tobacco can be addictive habits to particular people. Our catgirl here seems a particularly depressing example, as even chainsmokers can still be generally productive people, but in this case, it, like alcoholism might be a result of depression pushing it as a relaxant, or one of many signs in a person with severe living or mental issues. There's definitely some backstory here we are not shown nyet... So far the bad comedian girl seems the most normal of the bunch. And I do think that cat-like behavior and psychology does play a role behind the lackadaisical attitudes of these neko characters.
