I think Cartoon Network needs to get some of that stuff off the air that they've been air for ......3-4 years now. It got boring long long ago. I applaud them from bringing Inu Yasha, but curse Viz for killing the voice acting. They have that one guy as Inu Yasha, from Ranma season 4 and he sounds terrible. Oh well...

if ADV's anime network would be launched soon, we wouldnt need cartoon network, since other publishers would probably like their products on it as well.

Anime Network is exciting for sure, but don't expect it to replace all the other stations for Anime programming. It will compete with them; the shows that you want to see could very well end up on Cartoon Network or other channels. |

Yep, after all, CN will still have Dragonball, Tenchi, Gundam(s), Cowboy Bebop, Inu Yasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, and now Lupin III, as well as upcoming Big O Season 2 and Ghost in the Shell TV. I don't think people well leave CN for AN right away
BTW: Dec 28 AS will have a nice Chirstmas present for all, Char's Counterattack in widescreen format. Woot. Talk about one last blow out till the end of AS Saturday. The sorce is my Directv Guide. |

Consider this, The Anime Network is the first, but do you really think it's going to be the only or even the last? Cartoon Network reps in the past have made a few off hand comments that have shown interest in making their own anime channel (like Boomerang) so perhaps with some time we will see a slightly more mature cartoon network offshoot that would show an anime based Toonami-like lineup daily and then an Adult Swim-ish lineup nightly. Of course, this is entirely speculation, but The Anime Network will have a few large gaps in it's programing where it wont be competeing for anime viewers, especialy during the day. Just have to wait and see, I doubt anyone here can see the future.

Perfect point, Emerje. Is ADV going to be the lone wolf in broadcasting exclusively anime? I tend to agree with you that it won't be. In fact, I'm willing to bet that a Toonami network has just jumped ten places higher in the stack of "things we could do" at CN, now it's only behind three new Scooby Doo movies.
But seriously, CN will recognize ADV as a threat to their burgeoning adult audience. it isn't a matter of Adult Swim not getting the programming, it's a matter of there not being enough Adult Swim. They can't sacrifice their bread and butter, but a huge profit oppurtunity can't be ignored. Therefore, Toonami the network is probably getting reconsidered as we speak. Ultimately, though, there is also the possibilty that ADV will burn some other distributor with their network. If it's a big enough company, they'll probably try and start their own network. It'd have to be a big company with a short-fused CEO. I'm thinking Tokyopop, or maybe (MAYBE) Manga Entertainment. Although if Bandai should ever become dissatidfied with CN, they have the werewithal to create their own network. |

Now that well intersting to say the less. CN's Toonami/Adult Swim block has a strong backing from Funanimation with Dragonball series and YY H, Bandai with the Gundam series, Outlaw Star, Pliot Canidate, and Big O, Pioneer with Tenchi, and Viz with Inu Yasha and Hamtaro. (If I miss a few, I'm sorry. |

I am just wondering if they show the same things all over the country on CN and toonami. I am aware of what Lupin III is, but have never seen it on CN and was just wondering if anyone knew if CN had the same line up all across or if it varied by time zone or something other factor.

Programming for CN is nation wide, so everything will be same.

Don't worry, Sean. You haven't missed anything yet. Lupin III is a yet-to-be-broadcast acquistion. The reason everybody is talking about it in a quasi-past tense is because Lupin is an OLD property. Not dated, and certainly not irrelevant, just a series from way back when. Lupin is the original afro wearing kung fu artist. Spike learned all his coolness from him.

The only past tense I use when I refer to Lupin is, "I was going to buy it until Pioneer decided it's more important that Tenchi fans aren't offended."

Why would the anime network get Trigun and Hellsing over CN? It doesn't make any sense at all, since the US rights are owned by pioneer in both cases and they have already contributed to CN's toonami and adult swim blocks.
Don't think that if an anime channel pops up it will be a guaranteed hit; I'm sure 80% of the people who watch anime on toonami and/or adult swim have never heard of ADV. What makes everyone here so sure that ADV will make their network more teen-aimed (yes, anime is not for adults, its for teenagers) than CN's toonami block? Who says that they'll be willing to pay, provided that they can even persuade the owners, for bloody series like hellsing or good dark series like cowboy bebop? In fact, why would they pay for anything at all; they already have a metric ton of properties that could carry a channel for about a year on its own; if they show repeats like CN does, then they could go for 2 or 3 years on only their own material. Of course, their shows don't lend themselves to network television, so they'll probably be forced to buy shows from other companies; and thats where the problem comes in. What is there to buy that you can't get on CN? They have the insanely popular 500 episodes of Dragon Ball, and now they're doing Yu Yu Hakusho and Inu Yasha; each 100+ (or at least, Inu is headed there)... they wont need a new long series for a while at this rate (since they survived like 5 years on DB and tenchi), but they'll get one anyway (if FUNimation doesn't sell broadcast rights to One Piece, I'll be very, very surprised). So what's ADV to do, besides try to buy broadcast rights to series that you can already watch elsewhere? Not even Eva can help them topple cartoon network. Macross (er, robotech) will help them, but I don't know how much. If I were adv, i'd take a gamble and try to get some unpopular series that didn't do well for very cheap (some properties Viz abandoned, like takahashi's Maison Ikkoku come to mind; they could even market it as "from the creator of inu yasha"). Its worth a shot, and its aimed directly at the niche market that they'll probably start out with and eventually die with. |

Actually, I'd think that Pioneer would be more willing to deal with ADV than with Cartoon Network after the Tenchi debacle.
I may be wrong, but I don't recall any other Pioneer propeties being aired since Tenchi Muyo found its way on air, and there hasn't been an effort to air the Tenchi movies, either. While Tenchi is a great series and a timeless, revolutionary one at that, it missed the mark on Toonami and brought flak from all sides. DBZ fans didn't like it because there wasn't much (if any) action. Hardcore fans didn't watch it because of all the edits. And even with all the edits the show still raised a racket amongst censor-happy parents groups who don't want their kids learning about sex until they're in the backseat of some senior's Camaro on prom night. Pioneer went to bat with one of its premier series, and bunted it straight to the pitcher. They're a little gun shy, now. So, where does Pioneer stand? Well, they've got three top tier titles that either have been turned down by Toonami or they haven't submitted. There's Trigun, which is a fan favorite, full of style, and hasn't aged a day since its release. They have Hellsing, which some have referred to as the coolest gunfest since Cowboy Bebop (debatable statement, but it is slick to watch). And we can't ignore the beautiful and spell-binding masterpiece of Clamp's X. Trigun could've had a home on Toonami, but didn't for some reason or another. Hellsing and X wouldn't make it because of themes that are just a bit beyond acceptable to the masses. Either way, there's a ready home for them with ADV, and knowing that Pioneer tends to make rational decisions when it comes to distribution, I tend to believe that at least one of these series will be on the Anime Network. |
