You mean you actively look for good gay porn?
Actually, they said on the AOD forums that they dropped it.
Actually, there was speculation that Geneon had an option for it.
See above.
That's what I thought, too, until CR decided to air old shows, TMS decided to upload some of its back-catalogue, and Discotek decided to bring back Fist of the North Star on dvd. Not to mention that live-action Hollywood movie has yet to happen. |

"Dropped Bleach" ?
Wow, didn't even notice that when I wrote it. That is pretty funny! lol. Good eye there, Brian. Would have loved to get my Answerfan posted for better reason though. Oh well, I can't complain. |

Is that American for "girlfriend"? ---------- About the use of automatic Encyclopedia links in articles, it gets rather annoying when a phrase such as:
then becomes:
Yeah, what does that Anime have to do with Lupin 3rd? ---------- Ahhh, headless Naruto. That takes me back. Too bad I deleted all the images from a set I had which was just highlighting bad animation mistakes. Some of them were hilarious, including one scene in which I think Naruto was drawn in twice. Or was it Luffy from One Piece? Darn, I can't remember. I'll see if I can track some of them down. Last edited by dtm42 on Fri Oct 30, 2009 4:06 am; edited 1 time in total |

Well, a specific gay porno actor is really popular among otaku, enough too have an action figure tailor-made, and someone bought two for Christmas... |

I'm surprised the poor animation quality in naruto wasn't brought up more. After the large budget cut after the Valley of the End fight, the animation quality was as inconsistent as inconsistent can get. Blocky fat characters, eyes pointed askew, weirdly shaped faces, repeated frames, blurry smudge backgrounds, the list goes on....

I wish I'd known earlier what this column's question was. I'm glad to see so many people saying that art consistency isn't vital as long as the story is good. What I would add is that, as far as art goes, it's all about the Love.
Classic example, the original Macross anime. One reason modern viewers can accept its visual shortfallings is that it was made 30 years ago. Another, less mentioned, reason is that for all the inconsistency, it's obviously made with passion - these animators knew they were doing something great and new, and were also excited by the epic story, and this shows through in their drawings, the sheer naive excitement of creating animation. Nearest everyday example I can give is when you drew little animations in the corner of your school textbook, the excitement at bringing your little stick figures to life, have them shoot little pew-pew bullets and bleed big red drops. That thrill is irreplacable. Nowadays, most animation seems to deliberately efface its hand-drawn origins, like it was cranked out by a computerised stencil machine. So when characters go off-model (as they inevitably will in a long-running or uber-low budget show), it's disconcerting, like the Naruto machine jammed or something, because the fact that the whole thing originates from the hand of an artist has been carefully hidden from us. That's one reason I generally avoid long-running shows. That, and because I tend to throw hysterical girly fits if someone spits saliva instead of blood. |

I'm with Matt, animation quality doesn't bug me at all. Mostly because I never notice changes. Sure, I can see the changes between Clannad and After Story, but I can't notice the quality changes throughout each season like many others can.

Maybe you mean it in a specific way I’m not getting, but I hope you’re not saying that yaoi/yuri by itself with their same-sex romances as a ‘perversion'. But if you do believe that not all yaoi/yuri fans read/watch it for the titillating sex, then how is it still a ‘perversion’ even then? I admit to being a yuri fanboy, and while I don’t mind the sex, some titles I check out are just cute romances without them, and I don’t feel it’s perversion at all. I read it because it’s a different change in pace from hetero romances because it removes the traditional gender roles, and I just find girls more appealing. It’s all just escapist fantasy romance, like hetero romance. Last edited by pachy_boy on Fri Oct 30, 2009 9:29 pm; edited 1 time in total |

So going off model is an eye sore? Not necessarily bad. It's all about competence of animation artist and his or her intention of expression.
Speaking of going off model, there are two ways to go about that. One is from inexperience and the other is from experimental intention. In TV animation's case, it's the inexperienced animator who cause unattractive off-model. They try to look closest to the model, but something is always off. Like eyes of a character are asymmetrical. On the other hand, experimental intention throws original style of the model out of window and implement it's own deliberate style. I could think of few. Animator Shinya Ohira did that ob FLCL ep.2 and Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2. For TV, animator Shingo Yamashita did that to Birdy Decode. Basically the character is off-model due to inexperience, that's bad. However, when it goes off-model for sake of better expression (gestures, internal state of the character, and/or animator's inner desires), it's forgivable. Some people said that they get angry when anime character designs don't like like its manga counterpart. I think that's unfair comparison. In animation, animation artists have to draw thousands of drawings in few months. So simplifying the graphically complex manga art is necessity, not a choice. People have right to complain when their favorite manga character's face is drawn crooked on anime version. The have right to do so because of animator's incompetence. If people insist that Anime has to look exactly like manga in terms of visual term, why bother making animation? Isn't it cheaper and faster to make FLCL style manga camera? When I watch TV episodes back to back, I do have dissatisfaction on difference between episode 1's character models and Episode 2's character models. Come to think of it. I felt that newer shows are more tighter on models than older shows. On older shows, character models of each episode are so off that I have to pick out best on-model episodes out of Animation director/supervisor credit alone. For example, I still think Cowboy Bebop episodes 1,5,12,25,and 26 are still great because character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto handled those episodes as animation supervisor. For newer shows, I have no intention of picking out best on-model episodes because they're pretty consistent. |

Hell no. Those infamous Manga-sequences were ground-breaking, using techniques that hadn't really been tested much (if at all) prior to the show's production. The sequences were incredibly expensive and time-consuming to make. And I cannot think of another Anime that has uses them despite FLCL being over nine years old. Besides, as much as I absolutely adore the Manga-sequences, I watch Anime to see animation, not to see Manga on television. If I wanted Manga I would simply read a Manga. If I could find a single volume in my home city, that is . . . |

I couldn't think of enough to say to write a full response to last week's question, but to put it shortly: it depends. Some series I notice, and I mean really notice, to the point that it's distracting. Episode 20 of RahXephon I can barely watch, an episode of the recent Michiko and Hatchin had one half of an episode in much cheaper animation that almost ruined some really dramatic moments (thank God for good music), and Macross Frontier went cheap on the high school episodes, which became really noticeable whenever there was a flashback.
But if the overall quality of the animation is mediocre, I don't really care about fluctuations. It's only if something's been high quality and makes a sharp, brief dip. For example, the awful quality control level in Speed Grapher never bothered me, because it was always all over the place, I just got used to it. But about yuri... as that rare beast, the straight female yuri fan, I know most, maybe all, of the appeal to me is the drama, not the titillation. Because homosexuality is still not universally accepted, real homosexual relationships (not the BFF-schoolgirl-lesbians kind) can be fraught with angst and drama that you don't always get in heterosexual relationships. It's the whole forbidden love angle. Part of the reason I'm not that into yaoi/BL is because every series I've encountered has made it too easy for the characters to be together (feel free to offer counterexamples, fangirls). Lots of yuri does that too, but my favorites are the ones that capitalize on the controversial romance to generate a good story. Of course, the other reason I like yuri is, I'm sure, a reaction against the stereotype of the yaoi fangirl. Now, I don't mind a well-done homosexual relationship between men, and heavens knows I'm rooting for Watanuki and Doumeki in xxxHOLiC, but I got sick of the constant slashing: "OMG, they're best friends, they must be in love!" "OMG, they're mortal enemies, they must want to screw!" So I went in the opposite extreme and got into lesbian romances, questioned my sexuality for about five minutes, realized I still was only attracted to guys, and just decided to accept what I liked for whatever reason I liked it. For me it is definitely a preference and not a "perversion." |

Geneon gave their Lupin series a great dub, IMO. But it totally wasn't really for the Adult Swim audience (ie. male teenagers and college students) The animation looks incredibly dated, and the DVD release schedule was sucktastic.
I'd buy a boxset of the season in a heartbeat. |
