Not sure if you pay special attention to the eye designs in anime, but are there any shows where you've found them to be the most appealing?
In terms of more stylized designs, I really dig the way the eyes are drawn in Toradora!. Most of the characters have large eyes, but they're drawn very "curvy" right down to their pupils, while also having a nice glossy feel to them. Very attractive designs in my opinion, and they really bring out the personalities of the characters. In general, though, I'm not really a fan of eyes that are too detailed (Clannad being a good example) and too proportional (like Monster's). A show like Honey and Clover has nicely balanced desgins that I find very appealing. |

It is difficult to say since different eye designs are used across all of anime. What Clannad did with the eyes worked well for them, while a completely different approach with eyes in Death Note worked there.
Hmmm. I think the eye designs in Hunter x Hunter(late in the series and the Genei Ryodan OVAs) are my favorites since there is a variety used for different characters. Koro Lucifer's eyes are so bottomless and sexy! In a man-crush sort of way. |

A rather odd question but I have an answer or two.
Generally, I don't like the overlarge eye designs -- they look freakish to me. I can also do without the glistening/shimmery stuff they seem to be too fond of. That said I kind of took to Kagami in Lucky Star, and also the yellow-haired teacher (I think her name is Nanako). Their upturned eye corners are appealing and really fit the characters. Of course if you really want the vital eyeball, you have to look a the ultra creepy Ai Emma in Hell Girl. How would you like to wake up to have those staring at you? |

The more realistic the faces and their features are the better, if you ask me. The more exaggerated the facial features are the less I like them. For instance a lot of Osamu Tezuka character designs from Black Jack bug me. There aren't many times where I would care about it enough for it to affect my enjoyment of the show though.
That being said, speaking of cool eye designs, my personal favorite is probably Shiki Ryouji's mystic eyes from Kara no Kyoukai. Sweet psychotropic rainbow effect combined with deadly functionality. |

I also usually like a more realistic art style but the 70s inspired, shojo-esque eye designs in Toward the Terra just tickled my fancy. Especially in the pilot film, look how shiny that eye is at 0:49!

Indeed, it is. Although I figured that since anime is known throughout the West as having characters with very large eyes, it'd be interesting to start a discussion about them. After all, the eyes are the window to a character's soul. 
Ah, totally forgot about her. Ai really does transmit a kind of creepy vibe through her eyes (heck, the same can probably be said of Tsugumi). |

Wow, that's the first time I saw that pilot film. Gotta say the eyes look more 70s shojo than what they ended up going with in the end, but the ones they went with in the end were still pretty shojo. Wow, they really changed some of the character designs drastically, must say I do prefer Tony with red hair though. Wasn't aware Nobuteru Yuuki did the character designs, they look a lot different than his style he used during Chrono Cross (oo, I like those eyes too actually!) I do like 70s eyes overall, but not if they're entirely comprised of sparkles only. Oddly enough I don't like some of the more modern shojo eyes because I think they take up too much of the face. I prefer big eyes overall though, they can show more emotion than smaller ones. I don't necessarily think they'd always work, just try and imagine Cowboy Bebop with saucer eyes, but when used right, I just love 'em! Oddly enough I will complain when I think they take up too much of the face though, for example, I dislike the eyes in Kodocha because they're just too big and the characters might look slightly like bizarre fish people at the wrong angles (like side shots). But most Tezuka stuff seems to hit a sweet spot for me. |

I don't know the exact name for any of the eyes, but the ones that are extremely big and narrow kind of creep me out a bit. Fantastic description I know, but like I said I don't know the names of any kind of eye style. Also it really creeps me out about eyes is when they never blink. It's probably just me, but when a characters eyes don't blink the entire time they are talking it gives me this inhuman feel about it. When there is a combination of the two I find an Anime hard to watch sometimes.

Yes, but have to admit, there's just something about an "Eyes wider than the head" Leiji Matsumoto girl.

I don't think there's a name for it, but I believe I know what you're talking about: http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/9363/misty12.jpg I think a lot of anime in the nineties had a few characters with very big and narrow eyes. Weird-looking, but very distinctive.
That could also be because of the animators cutting corners, I think.

I pay particular attention to the eyes of characters because it's the first thing I notice. There have definitely been some stellar designs, which can really set off a character's overall appearance (and often times, increases their beauty). Here are my favorites (in no particular order): Yakumo and Eri from School Rumble. Love those designs, especially Eri's eyes. With her blond hair, they definitely stand out. Yakumo's eyes are red, which look a little devilish, but still suit her well. Karin from Karin. The odd shape definitely makes her stand out and she's got one of the best designs I've ever seen because of their uniqueness. Haruhi from Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. Simply gorgeous, and I absolutely adore the color scheme. I'm not too fond of the white blotches they use as reflections (could be toned down), but they're still awesome to look at. Alice from Aria. Damn, those blue eyes just melt my heart when I see them, and the artists really take a shine to using them to their full potential when emotions are to be conveyed. Season 3, when she sings, watch her eyes. They beam with confidence. Incredible to watch. The girls from Ultramaniac. Very unique design, though I would be hard pressed to call them beautiful. At first, the design threw me off a bit but as the series progressed, I got used to them enough to remember they stand out quite a bit against many eyes found in anime today. Mai from Ghost Hunt. I'm a sucker for brown eyes and the artists made sure Mai's eyes conveyed her emotions, and well done at that. She's not the most beautiful anime girl out there, but at the same time, she is. I love watching her eyes. I've seen this series 4 times now and I simply can't get enough of those eyes. Let's not forget the girls of Magic Knight Rayearth, especially Hikaru. The girls seemed to be purposely drawn to enhance the eyes, and for an older anime, the artists did an extremely good job with them. My last order purchase introduced me to Lucky Star and there's no question Kagami's eyes stand out the most. Very similar to the shape of Eri and Yakumo, but yet distinct enough to be unique to her. I especially love the "shock" look. Mmm... Kagami. So. Damn. Cute! Got Firefox? Like Kagami? Enjoy Finally, the cast of Azumanga Daioh certainly wins an award for simplicity, yet truly effective. Every time I watch this series, it stuns me how so little conveys so much. You've gotta give props to the crew for this one. As for the rest, pretty standard design whether they're realistic or over-blown for emphasis. Beyond this, no other characters really stand out where I've not seen the similar designs before. With the computer, eyes can be given greater detail, so the list above will eventually become pretty common as well. Though I'm pretty sure we'll remember a characters eyes more due to their personality and physical features. That's okay, though. I mean, look at our eyes. Pretty common stuff yet some still stand out better than others. Now, if only Nintendo would update their Mii eye list so we can create anime avatars better.

About the only time I ever remember taking alot of notice of the eye designs where the various "crazy eyes" used in the Higurashi series. The animators seemed to be really good at getting that sudden flash of psychosis look.

Well I'm probably one of the only ones here who doesn't like the huge eye design. I prefer if it looks more realistic.
If I must choose a more "anime style" eye I would probably go for the Ghibli design, nothing over the top, but looks good. Still my favorite eye design is in the Art of Yoshitaka Amano. here is an example. Got to love those eyes... |

Great examples, PetrifiedJello. Let me just comment on one in particular:
It's interesting that you should mention a Clamp title, because they seem to draw some very unique eyes in their manga (especially in their older titles like RG Veda and Rayearth). I would describe the eyes drawn in their older work as having an angular, "piercing" quality to them. Especially in Rayearth, where they're drawn big and have a very irregular form, much more so in some characters than others. The designs were carried over quite fittingly in their respective anime versions and as you said. I think Clamp is using a more subtle approach to the eyes in their newer stuff. If you look at the eyes drawn in Chobits and Kobato (anime or manga), you would see that they're much smaller and more curved. Personally I like Clamp with their newer designs, but I kind of dig the exaggerated ones in Rayearth. |
