I went to a Suncoast video store the other day and noticed every anime DVD was locked in one of those plastic security containers. I preceded to look around the store and noticed that none of the other sections had any devices.

Anybody else notice this?

Anime must be a hot shoplifting item this year. What I'm really surprised at is how anyone could shoplift DVDs from that store. I mean the stores are tiny (only like 20' x 50') and have those security poles at the entrance. I'd be more worried about the manga lying all over the place.

My suncoast aint like that. Mainly cause you CANT shop lift. 3 employees working a 20 X 20 foot area.... Security poles.... Mall security roaming the mall... A shoplifters hell. Which is good cause then they cant shoplift and are forced to BUY it. ^^

Sure, they have the security tag sensors, but today's thieves are getting craftier (is that even a word?). Back when stores were just using the little tags on the outside of the package, they realized a good strong magnet would deactivate the tag. So now, in order to make it harder to find, the tags are being placed inside the cases, in different places depending on the manufacturer and sometimes even the title. These are still deactivated by a strong magnetic field, but since the shoplifter doesn't now exactly where in the package it is, they could accidentally go over the tag a second time, effectively reactivating some kinds of tags.

Now the big thing is to [EDIT - No. -C]. I've even caught people at our local Sam Goody walking around in the back of the store doing this while supposedly looking at music albums. Hell, when I worked at Best Buy, we caught a kid doing just this with his mother's help. He would bring something back to the back corner of the store where she was "looking" at TV/VCR combos and ask her if they could get it, she would say no and he'd take it back and grab another to see about that one, needless to say none of the cases went back with their discs. Security thought something weird was going on so they checked, and sure enough the kid had like 6 discs in his coat pockets, of course mom denied knowing what he was doing and since he was only 10, she didn't go to jail, he just got a serious talking to by the police and his mom. We later got word they had gotten caught at another store doing the same thing, only this time mom was hiding the discs.

By putting something that right now is a hot seller in these locked cases, it makes it harder for the theives to steal, of course it also makes it harder for legitimate customers to browse at their own leisure.

Being a Loss Prevention Consultant, I'll step up to the plate.

DVD's are a hot item to steal. However, a best guess is that Suncoast had problems with folks taking DVD's and leaving the case behind in other stores (which seems to make sense to a shoplifter; why carry a bulky rectangle with the security tag on it when you can easily slip a circular disk into your baggy pants?), so instead of patching up the theft-prone stores, they decide to put a blanket policy and affect all stores. In some Music Chain Stores, i've seen alot of shrink associated with Anime among other genres. Why people steal can range from impressing friends (i.e. the "machismo factor" ) to drug use and kleptomania. Plus, (please, no accusations of steriotyping) I do see reports of people under 18 that are caught stealing Anime or attempting it.

Another reason is that there are Shoplifting Rings that "roam" from city to city, store to store, state to state. Maybe Suncoast got word of one such ring, and decided to take appropiate measures. I'm not too sure what Anime DVD's bring for these guys, but if they can steal it, and it's desireable, they will try to steal it.

I'll end my discussion here, because I might reveal too much about how to steal such things.

"Loss Prevention Consultant"? Is that newspeak for "store detective"?

Nope, I work for a firm that points out Security Problems for Stores and Businesses. I don't work on the store's payroll, just act as an outside consultant. I look for weak points in the stores security system, note problem areas, customer behavior and actions, etc. Course, not all of them take our advice to heart..... Laughing

There is one chain of stores....I could theoreticlly walk off with a whole messenger bag full of stuff and not get stopped or cause attention. I still am amazed that this store chain still is going strong today. And they NEVER took my report on their Loss Prevention seriously.

o_O

The guy at my local suncoast explained to me it was because of so much theft of anime. He was surprised that people were stealing that, and not the porn. Still, they need to work on their manga and collectibles safety. Those things can be so easily stolen, its unbelievable. But hell, the plastic casings don't bother me too much as to disrupt my purchasing of anime.

lol. That's a new one to me. People never buy mangas anymore, at least from what I've seen. I walk down the graphic novel section at Barnes and Noble, and there's at least 5 people sitting there on the floor reading mangas.

Read again. "FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN" Evil or Very Mad

Sure, I believe that plenty of people still buy mangas, myself included. But I have yet to see someone else purchase a manga. I've only seen people read them in the stores, then put em back on the shelf!

I don't really read them in the stores and put them back. I just do some research on the internet and see if I want the manga then buy it. Back to the main subject. My local anime shops don't really keep them in protective cases to prevent them from being stolen. They have the old fashion alarm tag things...sorry, I don't know the proper name for it.

Sensormatic Tags, Security Tags, Clips (The Bulky Plastic Ones that requires a special gun-like device, used on clothing), Paint Clips (this is a fun device....if someone steals clothing and makes it past the store, the tag "explodes" sending a very hard to remove dye over the clothing and anything else near it....almost like those Paint Packs Banks use that they slip into bags full of money during a robbery), etc.
