@xstylus Wait, they really fully recast the fmc of such a prominent franchise?! Must have been some bout...

Krystal herself has no idea, or at least she didn't back in 2016 when Sentai canned her. I only learned of this because just today Chris Ayres (who is recovering from a double lung transplant, and who Krystal is helping with his recovery) had this to say about it:

Chris Ayres via Twitter wrote:
"She was blackedlisted because they said she caused the symptoms of what we now know was my emphysema. I wanted to speak out the moment it happened but needed my job and insurance. I assume they are trying to erase the fact they ever did something so cruel and stupid."

And also...

Chris Ayres via Twitter wrote:
"Honestly I think this was more of a punishment for me for finally starting to speak out, since once I got my lungs they had no more ways to hurt me. All I can say is I am so proud of the work I originally did and nothing they do can take that away."

I don't know what Chris was referring to in regards to "speaking out" though, so there may be even more to this.

This is definitely a big necropost, but I think an exception should be made given the circumstances. If/when a new article comes up regarding this discussion can be moved there at that point.

As for this topic, that is a really shitty and backhanded thing Sentai has done. It's well within their rights to do so, but that doesn't make it right. I remember how excited Krystal was when she got that role. The fact they did this with no publicity or news about it is even more underhanded as well.

Imagine how the internal discussions for this must have gone.

Exec 1: We'd like to spend the booth time and budget to pay a VA, director, and sound engineer to redub a lead role in a show from 7 years go.
Exec 2: Was anything wrong with the old performance?
Exec 1: No, but we decided not to use that VA anymore for dubious medical reasons, so we'd like to erase her existence from our properties as much as possible.
Exec 2: Will this generate enough additional SteelBook sales and HiDive streaming numbers to turn a profit?
Exec 1: No.
Exec 2: Will this generate enough additional SteelBook sales and HiDive streaming numbers to recover the redubbing costs you've proposed?
Exec 1: Probably not.
Exec 2: Will this move generate negative publicity and hurt our company's image in the community?
Exec 1: Pretty good chance it will.
Exec 2: ...You're approved!

EDIT: ^ Unless the Japanese side wanted the recasting to be consistent with the movies, in light of what Chris Ayres was quoted saying below about re-recordings for other parts.

Further stuff just got posted by Chris Ayres on Reddit.
ChristopherAyresVA wrote:
She originally said she didn’t know because they refused to give her a reason that she was not allowed to work. Even though they said their problem was with my tiredness, bad health, irritability and lack of focus, she refused to believe it was not actually her fault. I had never had any major problems with the company until this point. They noted that since she and I started seeing each other my health had gone down hill I was always irritable, tired and unable to focus (which I found out later were all symptoms of my disease). So as angry as I was I couldn’t say anything without getting fired and just kept my head down and took a smoke break whenever I could. When I finally collapsed, I spent a lot of that time worried that they would/could do something to take my insurance away. I had her stay quiet as well because I knew I was/am facing huge medical expenses for that I needed insurance. So until I felt a little safer I thought it best to stay quite. I have felt guilty for not speaking out immediately but didn’t feel safe to say anything until a little before my transplant. I did start talking more over a year ago and I’ve explained she was blamed for my symptoms for a while now. So that’s kind of a breakdown so you can see what seems like contradicting things we’ve said are really not at all. As for the offer thing. For one if you’ve heard that it’s a rumor I certainly never heard and is very not true. I have, whenever I was allowed, auditioned people for my shows and if you look at the cast lists I always try to use new actors in almost every show I’ve done. I like starting an actor in small roles and get a feel for what they can do and move them into larger roles. So it should be noted the only lead I ever cast Krystal in was BTB. There are far more actresses that I’ve consistently cast in leads. (Also to be noted that after Amagi the lead in my shows were not cast by my and with BTB they had me make casting changes in the cast after we had finished recording at the request of the Japanese licensor. Obviously Krystal was not replaced.) I also know that the company doesn’t have a problem with family and partners working together when you look at the great work my brother and I, Tiffany Grant and Matt Greenfield, John Swasey and his daughter and their production managers and some of their assistants do together.

Hope this clears things up. Love and Laughter Always -Chris-

Sounding more and more like Sentai really screwed the pooch and jumped to conclusions without getting any sort of information. Yes Chris could possibly have been more forthcoming with information, but honestly that's not on him to do so. That's on the company to investigate any issues they feel are there. Which it sounds like they did not do in any sort of fashion. Especially since they seem to be trying to erase Krystal without any notification or reasoning given to her. Plus no real publicity over it, just trying to sneak in the changes and hope nobody notices. Which people did notice. This really puts a stain on them as a company in my eye and will definitely influence my purchases of titles moving forward.

At first I was kinda hoping she would, though judging by what Chris said in that reddit post I'm kinda getting the feel that he and Krystal just want to move on and not re-open wounds. I dunno if calling out Sentai would do as much harm than good at this point.

It would be nice for more people to at least be aware of this. Not very many people are aware that the SteelBook has a new dub with an entire person's lines replaced. Very few people are aware that Sentai rarely re-uses discs which goes against the norm of just re-using old discs on re-releases. The staff credits, subs, video quality, etc. differ on 99% of their re-releases, Grave of the Fireflies, Clannad, Elfen Lied, and K-On! have new discs. When it comes to Sentai, assume the re-release has new discs. Going forward, this is the version that will be available on-disc in the future, though at the moment, HIDIVE appears to still have the old dub as these seem to match. Whether that will get replaced or not remains to be seen.
