I'm really looking forward to this as well. Since it has been a few years, I just finished a re-watch to prepare. BTW, just in case anyone else was not sure (like I was), the movie plot is canon.

Yes, a direct sequel to the TV series.

S2 E1:
Yeah, I would strongly suggest to watch both the first season and the movie since the second season does recap things a little but assumes you have seen both. The big development is Tanya now leading her own battalion and while the magicians she has fought with before do well the rest still needs a little practice. Besides that it was made very clear that most of the world is against the Empire and is ramping up. The mix of dark humor, action and Tanya being a nutjob is still present. My only complaint is mr pedo comrade... he is unnecessary. |

I liked the first Season, but after the movie with it's anticomunism speech while defending fascism... not in the mood to watch more from this.

He's sadly based on a real historical figure, who was repugnant and the author chose not to downplay how repugnant he was when using him for his story https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavrentiy_Beria |

I am not sure if that makes it better or worse for me. On one hand I applaud that the author chose not to pretty things up yet it only makes me dislike pedo comrade even more. Thanks for mentioning it though.

But we know how this game works, don't we? Yes, this character is based on a real person, but why did author chose specifically this person to include? And why didn't he chose similar persons to include on the other side? There's no lack of pedo fascists, it's actually harder to find one that wasn't. My current view of this series is this. Anime that use the German (Imperial) Military aesthetic are common, as Japan has a very long historical affinity with Germany. But in this story that happens during a war in a fantasy world there's "no politics". I don't remember the war being questioned, which side is wrong or right in their reasons to fight, but suddenly there's an "evil" on the other side. There's "Right" and there's "communism", do you get it? I remember the protagonist being disinterested about it all, being forced to fight against her will. But suddenly there's that speech like she is fighting in a "Just War". There was nothing wrong with the Germany that started two Great Wars, only that they lost, but now protagonist is there to fix it. May impression. I may be wrong, but I don't want to think about this anymore, not right now. Also protagonist is too ugly, those eyes makes her look deformed. |

I haven't rewatched the movie so I don't remember that speech. I do know that Tanya... or rather the reincarnated salaryman who inhabits her... is staunchly anti-communist but I doubt he is pro-fascist. The show does blend military elements from the real WWI and WWII, but in Tanya's world, the fascists don't run the Empire. It's still an imperial system with presumably a royal family and representative body. |

Episode 13: Salamander Combat Team
---------------------------------- Summary: Tanya addresses her newly formed combined arms unit, Salamander, before they head out to the eastern front against the Federation. Dismayed that her new forces are utterly incompetent, Tanya is forced into more hands-on work than she would like. Later that night, two Federation convoys approach under heavy snowfall. Worried at first by the lack of visibility and the eerie quiet, she orders everyone to stay vigilant. She soon realizes there was no need to worry as the artillery strike was devastatingly effective, and the enemy proved even more incompetent than her own unit. After the battle, Tanya uses her child-like voice to praise the artillery team while giving the other officers less harsh feedback, hoping to leave them with a positive impression of her kindness. It backfires, leaving the officers even more terrified of her, though motivated. ---------------------------------- Comments: Over nine years since the end of S1, and we're finally back. Thankfully, the transition is practically seamless. Tanya is still the smug, demanding, yet efficient soldier looking to take her god-rage out on enemy forces. The head honcho politicians are still politicking their machinations in the name of some ideal. And the world continues to get ravaged from all the warfare. But you know what? It looks and sound great! I've only seen S1, the movie, and special once, and it's been a few years. Seeing this episode, though, reminded me that the audio mixing for this franchise is stupendous. It's borderline almost-too-loud, but with just enough oomph to punctuate that chaos of war. Also, with admitting I've only seen everything once, I honestly don't remember where all the politics were going, aside from who to attack/defend against and when. I remember the Mary Sue storyline from the movie and how she's all out for revenge. But other than that, I feel like it's mostly Tanya and her crew just kicking ass. I do hope they address a little more of her vendetta with the god she seems to hate so much. Though I admit the combination of her god-hatred, tactical prowess, and the weird relationship she has with her underlings still make for a very entertaining watch, even if that's all they do for another 12 episodes. Hopefully, NUT doesn't take another nine-year break between seasons. 14 light novels (currently) is a lot of material to pull from, and I'm sure there's more to this franchise than just explosions and Tanya being socialpathically kawaii. I would love to see more. ---------------------------------- Screen Caps: |

I remember being able to square the real-world similarities because of elements that are different, like that 'not Germany' are not the aggressors, or done the sort of atrocities that could be assigned to real Germany for the period. I think it has been element of comedy where Tanya's main goal has always to end the war as quickly as possible, for peace talks, and yet how efficient she was had the people at the top didn't end it. The similar irony where all the things she says before a big attack that sound like she is a religious zealot are things she is forced to say to use the power, although she has been willing to commit what could be war crimes if the loopholes exist.
Towards the end of the new episode Tanya is trying to use her nice voice (the one she used as warning) to apparently be thought of as nicer person, but it has only made everyone freaked out that she is angry. And also, the irony of shots meant to just get an eye of what enemy forces were like, were apparently super lucky and pretty much destroyed them. |
