I e-mailed Manga, asking them if they had any plans to bring over the remastered version and finally release Gunbuster on DVD. They told me that they're still waiting to get the rights to the remastered version before they can think of releasing it on DVD. This made it sound like it will be a while before we see it here in America. I wonder what the hold up is.

My money is that Manga Ent. don't even have any rights to Gunbuster in general. I mean they are a wholly unreliable company that couldn't turn out a decent product if their life depended on it.

They have the rights. THey also have 15 year old hardsubbed master tapes

Seing what happened the last time they did that with a Gainax title, I'm going to say erring on the side of caution here

Oh yeah.

What was wrong with their handling of End of Eva?

I'm wondering that, myself. Confused

Manga Entertainment went through the time, trouble, and effort of collecting almost all of the original Evangelion dubbing team (which was a feat in itself, since a few of them "fell off the face of the earth"), which you would rarely see happen between two separate publishers.

Even though they are all older than they used to be and probably haven't done Eva for a while after that, they still came in and did all of the work -- and did it very well. I was overall impressed by their work on it, and I still can't find any fault with the storyline of the two episodes. IMHO, it completes the original intention of the series from its inception: the "tragic hero" story.

On the marketing side, they have a huge website devoted to both Death of Rebirth and End of Eva that still are there today. (Just click on the links to see them.)

So, just where did Manga go wrong with End of Eva?

I think there were sound issues with End of Evangelion that people with really high-end home theatre systems really noticed, though I didn't notice anything wrong with End of Eva when I rented it.

Well, nothing wrong on the technical side.

I'd say stuffing 2 DTS tracks onto the same release would be the first mistake, along with 2 DD 5.1 tracks and I think a few stereo ones, chewing the bandwidth.

Specifically:

Quote:
* 6.1 DTS ES Surround in English and Japanese
* 5.1 Dolby Digital EX Surround in English and Japanese
* English and Japanese Stereo
...
* Audio Commentary by Amanda Winn Lee ...
* Additional Voice Commentary by Talesin Jaffe and Jason C. Lee

= 8 different audio tracks total.

I think this was just because it was Eva, though. End of Eva was probably so big a production that they did go a little overboard on the sound options.

They could have still fit it all on DVD, though, since the footage itself is analog Progressive Scan in an average bit rate--basically about the same as the Evangelion "LS & VHS" version but cleaned up for theatrical release.

(Compare this to the digital footage for Evangelion Platinum, which is re-recorded from the master footage. To clean, sharpen, and digitize the footage with a high bit rate takes up a lot more room on the DVD than the original series and the movies would.)

btw, to get back on topic, I don't see how this all means that Gunbuster will be treated "poorly". Is there some other reason why you think Manga isn't going to do a good job with it?

Plus they mistranslated one of the most important lines in the movie.

When Misato is explaining the nature of Adam.

spoiler[In the original she said that humans were born from Lilith just as Angels were born from Adam. In Manga's dub she said "Adam was born from Lilith"]

And now back on topic, It would be nice if ADV could get gunbuster, they should have had Death and Rebirth and The end of Eva two.
