Retrieval arc's are a common thing in anime/manga. What was your favorite one? Mine was the sasuke retrieval arc because it had a lot of really cool one on one battles.

Are they common in anything other than Naruto and similar shows? Because I have no idea what you are talking about.
I type "retrieval arc" into Google and get a page of results about Sasuke, which is the single example you have already provided.

"Rescue" arc, I would imagine.

[EDIT: Please put reasons for your choices. -TK]

a rescue arc is any arc in which the main objective is to rescue somebody or something, which is quite common in anime. for example the tower of heaven arc (fairy tail).

Definitely would be Water7/Enies Lobby for me. The amount of building that Oda put into setting up the Galley-La, CP9, Franky House, the spoiler[Usopp/Luffy confrontation and later emergence of Sogeking], the backstory of Robin and Ohara and the Buster Call, etc. It's just soo immense and yet it never felt overbearing. An excellent rescue arc.

I've cried a lot as I've watched One Piece; Robin's backstory is one of the best tear jerkers for me. Can't help but cry whenever I watch spoiler[Robin crying, shouting to Luffy and the others that she wants to journey through the seas with them.]

In terms of rescue arcs, I think the Impel Down + Marine HQ arc is also amazing (still One Piece, surprise!). Among the Strawhat Crew I always thought Luffy's story was the most boring, but after hearing Ace's story as well, I can't help but be awed. Plus, I have a soft spot for Boa Hancock - she's easily one of my favorite characters in the show.

I also like Rukia's rescue arc in Bleach. This was the second and third arcs of the series, if I'm not mistaken, and here the action still entailed comedy. The laughs had gone cold as Bleach progressed, that's why the earlier arcs are always better for me. I like Rukia's rescue more than I did Inoue's. I guess it's because Inoue's felt like she really needed help, but Rukia did not want to be rescued, yet Ichigo and the others braved Soul Society to save her still.

I, too, much agree on the Enies Lobby Arc. Its entire execution was no less than genius.

I haven't seen many other rescue arcs worth their salt. The Sasuke Retrieval Arc was not nearly as impacting because it's very hard to care for Sasuke at all, nor for Team 7's apparent 'need' for him. Later chapters in the series only served to compound this.

lol I think you guys just changed my opinion. Now that I think about it, the Water Seven/Enies Lobby arc was much better than the Sasuke retrieval arc!

This topic kind of frustrates me as I gave up on Naruto and Bleach, I guess the Rukia retrieval arc from Bleach has some mention, specially love Kenpachi's part in it. More I think about it, the more I realise that it was good, and did not frustrate me.

Do character's attempts to escape count? If so, I was always rather fond of the episode of Macross where Hikaru, Misa, Max, and Kakizaki make their escape from Vrlitwhai's ship.

Mine would have to be from 3x3 Eyes where Yakumo spoiler[goes on a long quest to retrieve his beloved Pai, who was thought to have been lost after she faced off against Benares as Sanjiyan. The journey takes him four years to find her as she has become the identity of Pai Ayanokouji, a young schoolgirl.]

I can't make a valid comparison as I've stopped watching Naruto a long time ago. I'm not even sure what the Sasuke retrieval arc is. My favorite picks have a very glaring similarity, that is, an unwilling rescue. I think Sasuke's case is the same, if I'm not mistaken. Had I watched, I probably would have liked it as well.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, rescuing spoiler[Nia from the anti-spirals]. What can I say? It was a journey to the ends of the universe for her. Although in the end, spoiler[she couldn't be saved after all].

Oh man, that. I love it as part of the series, but the spoiler[tragedy of it just depresses me,] but that almost makes it better.
