Hi

I was wondering if its better to bye the anime, watch it on-line
or to do both. I personally don't own any anime titles. I watch them on-line and then move to a new one.

thank you for listening

You should really fix your english before posting, the mods here are really picky about that sort of thing. That being said, I'll usually watch series online and buy the DVDs as they come out. I mean if it's a good series I will, for series that I'm just not quite enticed to buy I tend to drop them after about two or three episodes.

It's always, if not mostly, better to buy the anime you're fond of. Buying it or subscribing to streaming services supports the creators. Watching it for free is fine if that's your prerogative, but I do like to support the series I like when I can.

you should buy, nothing better then helping the anime industry, getting all the extras, no bad loading times.....always good quality, you CAN find them for cheap...

Or do a little of both, ANN offers some series legally.

Just saying I like to own my anime, have a collection, look at all the extras and previews of other anime, get the nice boxsets, look for a good deal..its awesome..to say the least

I'm a collector, so if you were to ask me I'd tell you DVD. It's more expensive than the other option, but the video and audio quality is superior to that of streaming video. Also buyers contribute money to the domestic anime companies which then have capital with which to license more series and allow them to continue operating thus the gears keep turning and everyone wins. I do both but more streaming nowadays since it's friendlier to my wallet to weed out what's good and what's not.

If you wait a couple of years after its release, then yes.

...U.S. only.

Indeed. The feeling of owning series you like is just great. Besides, I was a little collector since my brathood(new word invented), so why would I stop now?

Back on-topic. Dvd or streaming? Well, I'd say both. Let me include fansub and renting to that, then there's my life.
Streaming is a nice way of browsing something before buying, but for me it's a little beyond browsing, since I hate to start something and not finish it... unless it's just awful with no good scenes at all.

Now that anime is legally shown on several websites, the cheapest way is definitely on-line (don't have to pay for cable or satellite TV).

But there are also lots of cheap anime DVDs available for sale at various on-line retailers and even some shops, so costs isn't as big a factor as it used to be. And if you wait long enough, you can get some bargain "series collections" and such.

Anime was a pioneer in DVD development, at one time accounting for 25% of all DVD sales. We see the same pattern with legal on-line streaming and viewing.

Bottom line: If there's an anime you want to see that's available on-line, check it out. You can always buy it later if you want a hard copy of it.

[Mod Edit: Sorry, plugs for websites aren't allowed, and neither are signatures specifically for that reason. It's not relevant to the post, so it shouldn't be in it. What exactly are we talking about here? Watching anime through legal streaming sites like ANN, Hulu and Crunchyroll or watching it illegally via unauthorized streams or downloads?

If you're talking about legal steaming then it really just comes down to personal preference. The amount of stuff that is available is somewhat limited but if you find it sufficient and don't want to spend the money on DVDs, then by all means just stick with that.

If you're talking about illegal steams or downloads though, then yeah, you should definitely buy some DVDs. Illegal downloads and streams contribute nothing to the companies that produce anime. Personally, I wouldn't say you need to always buy DVDs. I have no problem with people sometimes using illegal means to watch anime so long as they do at least understand the necessity of contributing and make a reasonable effort to do so at least part of the time.

DVDs for me in the always category, I find watching streams to be a cold experience, it stemd from wanting others to watch with me than anything about convenience or ease of use (as the legal streaming options for me are.) It's just I find harder to share with others is all.

Probably both is good, buying DVDs contributes money and you get a good quality physical product you can watch at ease. Plus streams alow you to sample different ones, and watch shows that are not yet or probably will not be licensed. And it can be fun to be watching and discusing the shows as they are released.

Alright, in the future try to keep in mind that initiating a thread means you are opening a new discussion. As the person opening the discussion, you are expected to provide a reasonable opener with your thoughts and opinions on the matter spelled out for the rest. Unfortunately, just saying "This is what I do, what do you think?" isn't going to fly.

I'm leaving this one open for now because enough legit discussion is taking place after the fact, and I'm not one to lock a discussion that's going somewhere and that people are participating in just because the initial poster did a poor job with the opener.

With that said though; I'm sure most of you are familiar with the fansub debates and the inevitable hell they turn in to. Well, let's try to avoid doing that in this case, because I will lock it the moment this starts to turn ugly.

I would say for the shows that are out and lets say you have the money than buy the dvd. But for shows such as fist of the blue sky or gintama or most of One Piece then you can watch it online legally or illegally. When its not avaible anywhere or you dont have the money than streaming is a very good option.

It's best to do both. When you want to support the industry, you should also buy the discs. For shows I either have to shell out lots of money for legally importing it or that won't see the light of day for American DVD, I go to CrunchyRoll or other places. I am saving up to buy Tower of Druaga season 1, Evangelion 1.0, and the first boxset of Tears to Tiara.

I rarely watch stuff online. I've been watching some stuff lately because, quite honestly, I can't find any awesome looking box sets to purchase that I'm interested in.

Personally, I like to purchase my anime. I feel like I'm contributing to the community and helping companies bring product to the US by doing so. In addition to that, I'm a collector. I love owning limited editions and collector sets. My DVD collection isn't as nearly as large as what I've seen on Shelf Life here, but I hope to submit a pic soon because I am pretty proud of it.

Not to mention I like getting extras on the DVDs like interviews, art slide shows, and whatever else they can cram in there. I also like getting yummies in the Box Sets like the Haruhi Season One box and the Trinity and Basilisk First LEs.

I prefer DVDs myself.

The quality is better, for one thing.

But the major reason is that my recliner is a hell of a lot more comfortable than the chair in front of my computer and I don't have to lean in to watch the program on the monitor.

I honestly don't have a problem with either one, but DVD is certainly my preferred, there's a certain convenience to having the DVDs right there for me and damn if they don't look nice in a collection picture. For one, I can play them on a much bigger TV (and my sister recently got an HDTV and a PS3 for Blu-ray, so if I ever get an anime on Blu-ray, that outta be sweet! I still have a tube TV, those things like to last for way too long but hey, I still love it).

The other problem for me is my computer itself. Now, it's great at playing DVDs and viewing things online, but the location isn't exactly ideal and the speakers kind of suck unless you're using headphones (they're great if you're using headphones though). At night, I tend to get interrupted with my watching by my roommate watching the TV so the computer is certainly a conflict solver, but my stupid desk chair, it can never go back far enough to give me any sort of really comfortable viewing position and even though I can sit on my bed just behind it, I can never get the viewing angle right and there's still that annoying wooden uncomfortable bar at the end that I can really use as a good foot rest or anything. I find this seems to matter more when I'm watching things on fullscreen, but on places like hulu, their initial video sizes are just way to small for me to watch comfortably so always have to adjust screen size and yada yada. Now, if I'm watching a DVD on here, I don't have to put it to full screen size, but then I'm also very likely to get distracted by people talking to me on aim if I don't. So even when watching both DVDs and online on my computer, I still prefer DVDs because at least the quality will always be better and if the opportunity arises, I can go put it in the DVD player and watch it on TV at any time. The chairs here just aren't that comfortable (and these desks seriously need a leg rest underneath of them for maximum comfort). And one more advantage, if I have to stop suddenly in the middle of an episode, my DVD player on here will remember where I was on it and resume it when I put the DVD back in, can't do that easily online (gotta write down where I left off, then fiddle with those stupid overly sensitive play time bars).

Now, a lot of people will say "free is always better", after all, you're not paying any money to get it, but I don't think they're looking at all monetary aspects of such a statement, for one, it matters how much gains you will personally have from having a DVD set vs just watching it free online. For example, I for one really like my Mushi-shi set, the singles with the original artbox that all look just gorgeous, and that's not really something you'll get from watching it free on ANN or Funimation Channel. For me at least, having the DVDs is too awesome to pass up for me, so it's worth the money. You also can't get bonuses from watching it just online (like the Gurren Lagann backpack with LE set 2). Sometimes, I'd rather just pay $20 and watch it where and how I want than have to go through a bunch of hassles, even if I'm viewing it for free, it's just not worth $20 of my time and effort and frustration. Of course, this usually applies to a good show that I'm likely to watch at least one more time (sometimes any amount of money is too much to pay for a bad show).
