From oh.. 1985-1993-ish.
Little Koala, Noozles, Lil Bits, Bella and Sebastian, Mysterious Cities of
Gold, Fairy Tale Grimm's Fairy Tales, Maya the Bee and Maple Town.
These are among the first cartoons- no, the first shows I remember watching. I remember having to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to do go daycare (don't ask me how, but I remember my mom dressing me), and watching Cities of Gold and Maple town early early in the morning. I remember during the summer watching Noozles, Koala and Maya the Bee in the Early Afternoon.
Obviously this was long before I knew what anime was, but even way back then, I knew there was a certain style about it that separated it from He-Man, Transformers, Silverhawks and other cartoons I used to watch. It was the big eyes, brighter colors and the way their lips flapped up and down as they spoke for minutes in a single breath. Until I discovered the name of the art style some many years later, every anime I saw since then made me think of the classic shows I grew up with. Even Sailormoon, when it started in the States on Syndication made me think of the Little Koala, et al.
It would be natural curiosity, thanks to Youtube to track down the original Japanese versions of the above, but I just don't want to. For some reason I figure it would spoil the memories I have.
I just wanted to share. If anyone here is old enough to remember then, perhaps you could share your memories of them as well.
PS: I remember the commercial for the Maple Town toys before I even saw the cartoon.

I remember Maya the Bee giving me nightmares about being eaten by spiders when I was little...

It never occurred to me that Little Koala is anime. I adored that series when I was a kid. I guess I was exposed to otaku radiation at a far younger age than I originally thought.
No wonder I turned out the way I did.
The only episodes I can remember involved the wise mysterious cool guy making eucalyptus leaves into a paste and painting a line to lead a bunch of locusts out of town. An an episode with turtle eggs.
I don't think I've watched that show since I was 6 maybe. I should really check around the old interwebs and dig up some more memories. Thanks for the bit of nostalgia.

I remember At least little Koala and Noozles running relatively late; until like 1993, so I still remember them pretty clearly. Going on Youtube, it blows my mind I remember some of the episodes. I know I remember watching Lil bits at like 5 in the morning as late as 1995. God, it's impossible to believe it's still the same station.

Oh man, I remember Noozles. This makes me want to dig through my old VHS tapes and find episodes I recorded.

I used to watch all of these cartoons on Nickelodeon as a child. Maya the Bee & Grimm's Fairy Tales were especially favorites of mine. At the time I didn't realize they were anime but I guess I was a fan of anime even before I knew what it was.
Although not anime I also really enjoyed the cartoon David the Gnome which was an acquisition from Spain. Overall I thought Nickelodeon was a superior channel when acquired animation from other countries and were not only trying to come up with their own shows (most of which were vastly inferior, with some exceptions, to the shows they licensed).

Yeah, they had extremely intelligent young childrens' shows back then. And you're right, they were all imported. Well technically, Nick itself is an import, as it was based in canada. The first few seasons of their first crop of Nicktoons are classics too (up to and including Rocko), but that's getting off the subject. I think their last great kids cartoon (young kids) was Franklin. Though Little Bear had that sense of whimsy that the old shows had too.
That's what I like about Snow Fairy Sugar. It totally hearkens back to those shows. It's cute and innocent without being overly cute (it does stretch it), and without dumbing anything down.

I was such a huge fan of Littl Bits and Grimms Fairy Tales back in the day. I remember watching Snow White and Rose Red, freaking out that it was Snow White 2, but alas, it was not to be. I also recall the Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future VHS tapes, and while it was pretty cheaply done, there were some awesome moments, like flying through a giant battleships core and blowing up bridges.
To be young again...
