So I'm watching Kanokon 1st DVD and man what a waste of time it is. But I bought the DVD for some reason that escapes me at the moment so I guess I'll plow through the rest.
How many times can you think it funny to see the character Oyamada assaulted by one sexy girl, then the other, then both, whining and crying and sniveling the whole time about how awful it is and begging for help/mercy/whatever and it is supposed to be funny? Then of course the rest of the cast walks in and starts calling him a pervert and whatever. That just might have been amusing once, if set up carefully. I can at this point attest that it isn't funny after the 300th time they do it. Yet so many series just can't seem to resist doing this joke. So far not one joke they have tried has done anything better than fall totally flat. If the "hero" had even a merest scrap, the tiniest quantum of self possession, self respect, or even assertiveness that any human not institutionalized would be expected to have the show would be infinitely better. This point is actually illustrated by Kanokon actually hitting an erotic high point in spite of itself. spoiler[This happens unexpectedly at the end of the typical episode where Oyamada is of course being harassed with no resistance on his part other than the usual whining but almost out of the blue he says he wants to spank Chizuru as punishment for her being out of line. Although she has to lead him on the whole way he actually does it. Unfortunately they make little of the moment since it is at the end of the episode, and the next one starts with more high-octave exercise on the part of Oyamada's voice actor.] I dedicate this thread to all the lame jokes that anime writers seem to think we can't get enough of. |

I have to go with the "guys try to peep at women's bath/hotspring" scene. Thanks to moral codes, it's 100% inevitable that the guys will get caught and punished for their transgressions. Usually after the classic collapsing wall or getting their eyes poked out through a peephole routines. You'd think at least some guys would get GenreSavvy and determine, "these things never end well." The worst thing about the attempted peeping scenes is that even the audience usually doesn't get a good look at the targets. Instead, we hear the standard offscreen "Gee, you have really big boobs, let me touch them" "Ah, no~, if you do such a thing I--" exchanges, and only see a bunch of dudes in loinclothes climbing all over each other to scale obstacles. Seriously, just let the audience have their fanservice and let the guys get beaten up for some other misdeed.

Talking about repeated jokes, Gintama managed to recycle its jokes by adding new ones besides the reused ones, and was rather successful at that.
As for the lame jokes, I'd say when a girl gets all shy over something the male character did and end up hitting him. Clearly, he will either be thrown 5 meters away or simply end up bleeding for a single scene (afterwards the blood disappears by itself). The most lame case is when the girl clearly likes the character, but hits him anyway. I suppose it's alright, say, two or three times within 12-13 episodes, but once I see it happening every episode it becomes just annoying. So, pretty much any joke with one-sided violence won't work anymore. I'm tired of watching girls hitting boys and listening to their excuses "But I did nothing!", while in reality he really didn't. Angel Beats! did a fine job when it added those two characters (one male, and a female) and had them punch (etc.) each other without reservation. |

I'd say anything that somehow involves a situational misunderstanding, most often on the part of the girl. Now, I'm no raging feminist, but every time they do that they just show these characters as being pea-brained. The worst part is that these are used not only in comedy... Well-played by Kaichou wa Maid-Sama. spoiler[The female lead walks in on the male lead pinning to the floor a cute girl. Thing is, the cute girl is actually a boy, the male lead figured that out and was just harassing him, and the female lead figured it out as well]. Still quite funny

As for my own, I am so sick of the following routine or simular situations: (Tsundere girl) "don't get any funny ideas by looking at me" (Male lead) "don't worry I won't get any of you" (Tsundere girl)  *she gets anry and probably hits him* "I hate you"

So true. But I can think of two situations where they try to peep and it works for the viewer (not necessarily for the guys, mind you): - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, episode 6 (the uncut one, obviously). It works marvelously, we don't get to see nipples but there's plenty of fan service to go around and the plot works like a charm and is not predictable at all (the pixelized scene in particularly, that's genius!) - Ladies vs. Butlers!, episode something, where we get to see full frontal (and rear) nudity for long dozens of seconds, and in the end (quite predictably in the series itself), we get to see a guy and a girl, totally naked, touching each other (even though by accident). It's not brilliant, but it's fanservice gallore. I think when series go the usual mutilate-the-peer-so-much-anyone-would-simply-quit-if-they-were-him-way, it's just plain laziness and a very clear sign the authors don't think you're older than 12. So, if a series does this, you seeing the wrong series, basically. Unless your 12, of course. |

The lamest joke, even surpassing the bath/hot spring calamity, goes to leads who can't express themselves for love, especially males.
This inexcusable attitude is then turned into fodder to which the two leads are unceremoniously thrown together in awkward situations and still can't confess their love. When this fails, often times the women become submissive and thoughtless creatures who try everything from leaving love letters, making lunches, or standing like red poles as their embarrassment prevents them from uttering a single word. Though I can see why this is done. After all, if we're ever to see two leads confess early, the series would end after one episode or turn into a tragedy in which the guy mopes around until his other female best friend finally makes the moves on him. To this large swathe of lameness I'd like to add all jokes pertaining to bust size, and all attention focussed on it (including bra etc). The fact that even good series like Durarara suffer from it irritates me to no end.
With this I think we've covered around 99% of the content of a romcom.

Aye I did honestly try and give romcom's a try about the only one I actually got on with was Clannad. It would not be so bad if the cast was a bit more well ... human. Some of them are obviously from superman's planet's juvenile detention centre. And are inclined to put a guy through a vending machine if he so much as shows interest or says something out of turn.
Then there is the spluttering social incopetant who worships the ground the mc stands on while this is cute it's still a mask for a 2d character. Trouble is in any romance genre writes have to lie about the nature of people. It isn't some kind of find your soulmate on the first pass lucky dip. The differences between the realities of actual dating and the romantic expectations of fans are way out of proportion. I can't help but feel that this forces the writers to create rather 2d characters. As for my lame joke I honestly don't believe I am the first. the NOSEBLEED dun dun DUUUUN! I hate it I hate it I hate it it's such a lame ass cop out. |

Hear hear. This isn't so much a lame joke as one that is so vastly overused that it becomes lame. We have all seen animes where it is stretched out over 5-6 episodes and the male voice-actor's lines when the girl is present is reduced to little more than "gg-g-g---gg--ggg" for what seems like hours. May actually be hours and I blocked it out. The real-life situation that this draws from is of course common to many cultures, but I wonder if this is so specific to the experience of being Japanese that it means much more to them. Anyone here know about this? To see how lame (or unnecessary) it is, I look to Ouran Host Club which leverages the absolute opposite of this joke. That's the reason that Ouran seems so fresh compared to everything else in the genre. |

Played to its logical extreme in Maria Holic, and it really was quite absurd and funny. Not that it's a proper romcom. |

Reminds me that the jokes about women's figures, more specificly when they have a small bust and they make them out as no guy could like them. It just feels realy demeaning to consider a girl's worth being her bust size, even if done for laughs. (exception is that one Seitokai scene) |

I could never stand the old classic when the lead male somehow manages to fall over and land perfectly ontop of the girl of his dreams prompting gasps and shocked looks from any onlookers, then when we think it can't get any worse... oh no he's only gone and tried to use the poor girl's breast as a way of pushing himself up to which he then spends the next 30 minutes with his hand clamped on the thing with a strange look on his face and instead of recieving a slap around the moosh the girl just looks either shy and embarrassed or lets out an orgasmic cry because apparently that can happen to some women when you accidently touch their jugs. Sheesh.
In old shows this can actually bring a smile to my face as it's part of the makeup of rom/com anime but nowadays It really needs to be put to bed. |
