Though most are familiar with ES through the anime, I was wondering what people think of the original manga. It's very, very different in nature, but I much prefer the manga over the anime. It's twice as outrageous and offensive, but only half as obnoxious because the overall atmosphere is rather dark and cynical at times, rather than constant, sugary hyperactive lunacy from episode one to twenty-six. Sure, it's still random, but it's alot harder to become tired of the humor.
Some of the more annoying characters, Pedro, the Puuchuus, and Nabeshin, are completely absent from the manga. In their place are a plethora of side characters, and one major member of the Across (Elgala, a bizarre princess-like character who refers to herself as 'I, Elgala!,' thinks out loud, enjoys scoring 'brownie points' with Lord Il Palazzo and has a penchant for giant teddy bear pillows. Her most amusing contribution to the manga is her rivalry with Excel over Il Palazzo.) And while the anime makes fun of a different type of anime every episode, the manga seems to parody Japanese culture on the whole, making for an even more bizarrely 'head-scratching' experience with the distant references. On the whole I prefer the manga, the sarcastic and dark humor is just much less obnoxious to me than the anime's relentless hyperness.

The manga has its highs and lows, but overall it does get better as it goes on.

I've kept up with the manga series, and honestly it's one of my favorite titles. Compared to the anime, which I can only take so much of, the manga seems to have a certain mood which takes a little reading to acquire, but once gotten, the manga seems that much better. It's true that I would like to see a puchuu, even if once, yet I love the character Elgaga. She's definitely a great asset to the group.

Excel Saga is my all-time favorite manga. To me, it seems to have a more stable approach to paroding Japanese culture than what you see in the anime, which was too hyper and difficult to follow. It took me a few volumes to really get into the heart of the story, but the more I read it, the more I liked it. It doesn't have the wackiness and zaniness that the anime is infamous for, but it's a very good read, and I love the dark overtures that the manga contains.
And yes, I also agree that Elgala is a tremendous asset to ACROSS. She's my favorite character in the series.
