http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=10-924
By: HIROKI ENDO Genre: Manga, Science-Fiction "Eden Volume One is both a brilliant love song to the post-apocalyptic survival genre and the beginning of a deep exploration on man's role in the natural order. In the near future, a large portion of humanity is wiped out by a brutal, new virus that hardens the skin while dissolving internal organs. Those who aren't immune are either severely crippled or allowed to live with cybernetically enhanced bodies. Taking advantage of a world in chaos, a paramilitary force known as the Propater topples the United Nations and seeks world domination. Elijah, a young survivor searching for his mother, travels towards the Andes Mountains with an artificially intelligent combat robot. When he encounters a group of anti-Propater freedom fighters, a maelstrom of unique characters unfolds. Graphic, cyberpunk, and philosophical, Eden is a place where endearing heroes face a constant struggle for survival and violent surprises wait around every corner!" Pub. Date: Nov 02, 2005 Format: Soft cover, 216 pages, b&w, 5" x 7" Price: $12.95 ISBN: 1-59307-406-9 I'm LOVING that cover. Dark Horse just gets better and better. They're my favorite manga company over Viz now. All the seinen and afternoon titles they bring over. Three cheers for Dark Horse. Hip hip hooray! Everyone buy it (when it comes out |

I enjoyed the first volume of Eden, though not enough to put it on my list of great SciFi manga, but I'm really looking forward to this after reading about how it improves. Darkhorse is indeed a great company, though their DMP manga could be better compared with their other trades.
Viz is often a superb publisher (just look at Vagabond or even Shojo Beat), but all too often lately they pump out crappy trades of, well, crap. They still put out alot of great stuff (I don't mean to rag on shonen as I enjoy several of the Jump titles), but they've gone way down in quality and diversity in recent years. Still, they're the only english publisher with the guts to realease stuff like Sexy Voice and Robo. |

Those who haven`t checked out Eden yet are in for a treat.
To day, Eden has been the highest rated manga in Poland, only lately slightly losing to GTO. And also it is one of my all time fav`s. The story, as you may already know starts out in a post apocalypctic fashion. However, that kind of enviroment is quickly lost, when a more cyber punk one takes it place. But even then, the attitude changes. We get a whole lot of social arcs, dealing with problems of the modern world like prostitution, drugs, organised crimes and rise of power, all in such context it could make up a separate manga. In short, Eden holds up a LOT of genres within itself: post apocalyptic, survival, SF, cyber punk, psychological drama, social problems, romance (in a very depressing down to earth style), family issues etc. For many that is plus, but of course there are some who cannot cope with the changing *moods* of the story, the many flashbacks, the mixed in between arcs and a larger than usual cast of chatracters. Those may be confusing, but if one takes his time to actually get into the story I am sure he will find something he likes about this title. PS, the art is really good. But the manga is VERY graphic. If you are offended by graphic acts of sexual intercourse (often brutal one), rape, executions, guts flying everywhere occasionaly, KIDS not excluded, and more, are more of a gentle mind, then please, stay out of this one. Because physical violence is one thing but there are other types of it... |

Can you say Akira? From what others have told me it's quite a good SciFi epic, but I've also heard it becomes somewhat convoluted, and the author's action scenes overshadow his writing. After one volume I'm inclined to agree, but I'll just have see how it develops. Either way, I'm looking forward to it, as I'm in the mood for an epic story as I wait for someone to pick up Histore and Japan Tengu Party. |

Funny you mention that because in Japan its been compared to Akira in terms of similarities. While it definitely doesn't live up to Akira, I'd say it's more of a mini-akira but it's still quite good. |

For anyone interested in what Endo Hiroki's stuff is like, try looking for the one volume "Endo's Short Stories", containing a bunch of one-shots. It's a manga containing some great philosophical short stories with a very gritty and grizzly feel to them. Endo-san also loves to incorporate those Norse Gods or Greek God myths into his writing and weave them into his stories.

Well I wouldnt really compare Eden to Akira.
Though similar I found each of them to have its own unique style, similar on the outside, but rich in distinctive details on the inside. This true that at some point, the art rather overshadows the plot, but no one said that Hiroki Endo tried to revolutionise the genre. The action does seem a little standard but what I like best about Eden is the new touch on the old subject, which you will find in a form od greyish characters, relevant morals and an interesting mood, very different than from Akira. |
