I'm, not here to rant but to get some ideas from other people.
I've always wondered why 4kids is so picky with the anime they have. They make edits that are not even necessary (removing text in ENGLISH, changing the names that are not even complicated (Jose, Luciano, Placido), replacing music, and changing dialogue). Also if 4kids is worried about violence, they don't have to because young people constantly see violence in our culture 24/7. They aren't financially doing well which could be a consequence of their actions. Funimations' editing is very minimal, which is why they're doing much better. 4kids should follow Funimations tactics. It couldn't be the FCC's fault because they can't control content and if they intervened, there would be a constitutional crisis. Is some other group pulling their strings? I'd just like to know what goes on in 4kids' minds. What makes them tick?

You're not likely to get an answer which satisfies you, as almost no one in these forums is a company insider - and the occasional one that is generally doesn't discuss business-related issues like this. (And besides, in the nearly seven years that I've been paying attention to these forums, I don't think I've ever seen someone with 4kids credentials speak up.)
4kids had their reasons for doing what they did that made sense to them at the time. I rather doubt that their current financial troubles are linked too heavily to diehard fans not supporting the way they chose to edit their shows, as other companies have done this in the past and been quite successful at it - as was 4kids, for quite a while. They showed repeatedly that they never listened to the diehard fans, as they were always more targeted at the broader casual fan/non-fan viewer base, and I doubt to this day that anyone at 4kids is saying, "if only we'd listened more to the diehard fans, we wouldn't be in this mess." |

I imagine that the answer to this question is similar to the answer of the question : why did they make Robotech instead of just releasing Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada? The easiest, and most logical reason, is that the company thought that it would be more marketable that way. And really, it's hard to argue with them when you look at how successful they were. For a time 4kids was a big hit which had all of the titles that the kids wanted. They handled Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, One Piece, ext and for a while that made them the big bucks. Similar to how, for a while at least, Robotech was very popular in the sci-fi and anime crowd. Even today they still sell box sets of Robotech and I hear there's still a fallowing for it. But now that people have moved on from the fad there's not much going on for 4kids and their weird and seemingly pointless editing has come to bite them in the butt.

alot of 4kids shows seems to be based on marketing external products (such as pokemon with the pokemon cards; yugioh and the yugioh trading card sets)
so perhaps the fall in buying those external products (afterall atleast here I haven't heard anything about these trading card sets in a long time) is also in relation to their financial problems. |
