well for awhile now its been itching at me.
why does anime that isn't edited for kids ,come on late night?
to be honest anime that show on late it what say "hardcore" anime... (no i don't mean hentai) What I mean it show for true anime fans. for example.

Adult Swim - weeknights 12:30 - weekends 11:30

Anime Unleashed(G4) - 1:00 through the week

Animidnight(action channel) - tues 12 - fri 12

so those are mainstream channel that show anime that is..GOOD(a slight hammer to G4) and its ok... but does anyone have anything to say to this?

Two big reasons:

1. So that they can show it unedited (or nearly so) without getting into any potential trouble.

2. Because those shows aren't exactly ratings gold (as Adult Swim has shown), and they would rather save the prime time hours for the big ratings draws.

Also, fact of the matter is most of the shows that air on programming blocks like Adult Swim also ran late-nights in Japan, too. Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, these programs ran in roughly the 12-3 a.m. range there just like they do here, for exactly the same reasons they do here (low ratings draws with questionable content, in other words).

Also, because shows that aren't "for kids" don't aren't usually big hits in the West. Many people note that cartoons are for kids (most usually prevalent in Western culture) and many people also complain about the late night timeslots of mature anime, but really they correlate with each other.

The point is, until something major comes across, the idea that anything animated is for kids (in the west) will linger. Again, I think it comes from the idea that anything animated, in some fashion, purports a feeling of fantasy, or perhaps super- or sur-reality. Mainstream culture in the West just prefers reality-they think, no I can't, I won't, I shouldn't escape the real world, even if I want to, because its a cop out. Whereas with their children it's: "well, they are in their own little world anyway."

Personally, one of the major reasons why I like anime (and, in a more broader sense, fantasy in general) is like it is another world. And compared to the normal swords-and-sorcery fantasy so prevalent in Western society, anime tends to tackle esoteric and unique concepts. Myself, liking to think I'm a creative person, enjoy originality on any level. I've been immersed in American culture for so long, its good to take a looking-glass and stare into another culture's views/forms of entertainment.

But I've digressed majorly. The point is, the daytime is for the mainstays of American television, the sitcoms, and the anime to keep children entertain. Late night is the anime that may be a little too intense for children who stumble upon it and think "ooh cartoons, I'll watch!" And late-night is also the time older anime fans (a niche, let's admit) get their anime fix in. And anime won't be shown on TV in wide-loads until a large number of American people stop viewing it (and a lot of mainstream folks do think this) as "those bizarre cartoons from Japan".

One last note: Just because a cartoon series does not have profuse amounts of blood, cursing, religious symbolism, and sexual content doesn't mean it's necessarily "for kids". There are a lot of series, as many people know, that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and also series that deal with adult content and tackle issues that are really real for adults. But there's always that embarrassment factor. If you are someone in the quote unquote "mainstream" and you like something that is niche (could be anime, could be Dungeons and Dragons, whatever) that isn't generally popular, there's always the chance you could be shunned for being "different". Sad, but unfortunately, true.

...phew. Razz
